cogdoc you are a brave man.

    For what? The windscreen washers?

    Mine's a manual dude!

Again, if anyone else gets a wheel from Germany and ends up with a non DSG one when that's what they need, I'm happy to swap.

I'd highly recommend this, has transformed the dash and drive!

Here's the late nights this week....and what the fab new GTI wheel looks like.
It's a boost gauge on the dash, and an oil temp, pressure and exhaust temp on the console. The mess is to run a nice Alpine, only have a few wires left to sort out now. Yeehah!

and yes, that's a grand - dad dashmat. I'm seeing if it helps both sound and heat from the sun. It will be nice to finally give Jamie something to rib me about too.

Guys if you start looking for steering wheels on e-bay just make sure you notice the relevant parts, especially the multifunction button holes, cutouts and suitability. I've seen a few GTI style wheels with blanks where the buttons are, and they don't seem to have the mounting holes...and I wonder if there is space in the metal frame for the actual buttons.

Just be aware, because believe me purchasing using babelfish for german translation leaves a lot to be desired!

Hmm, i see. The yellowish circles are threaded holes for the buttons to mount into.
Also where youve marked button electrics is this a series of jacks for the actual button leads to plug into.?

DSG paddles mount to DSG holes.

Buttons mount to button hole - yellow.

Button leads travel down red dotted lines and have rubber clips to hold them.
They terminate at a controller box, where I've drawn the red box, where there is space for these electronics.

Here's what I mean to watch out for... is not the same inside!

any issues with the airbag? does it sit in the front part that you pull off?

does VAGCOM let you know with error codes?

or should i be searching for a tutorial?

Dude, airbag in the horn bit you pull off. No errors. Very easy. The only trick is the airbag clips and torx screws, you'll need a T20 bit but you need a torx kit for VW tinkering. Jaycar electronics have a great universal bit set with all manner of smaller bits.

You'll also need to angle grind a 10mm allen down to about 9.5, but I just had a rough go and it worked perfectly as it's a deep, not overly tight nut. I'm sure for a small fortune you could get the OEM tool.

I DID listen the the manual and earth myself before messing with the airbag, by touching some unpainted metal on the frame to earth any static electricity. Didn't want an airbag blow to the nuts!
