What car? There may be a single-mass conversion kit available.
I wouldn't be leaving it too long, they can and will let go, and it's not pretty.
Hey team,
My DMF is worn out and it was possibly due to a faulty starter motor.
I am wondering how necessary it is to have it fixed? I understand the rattle is annoying, and it sounds terrible turn on and off. However the price to have the DMF and motor was so high, are there any alternatives?

Thanks for the info, is going to an SMF recommended? If so why?
Is this the correct kit, Darkside Developments - Valeo Single Mass Flywheel (SMF) & Clutch Kit for VW 02Q 6 Speed
The other one is a "Sach's racing SMF" and it says it is not recommended for city driving.
Also won't a SMF be really noisy and a lot of vibration on a diesel?

SMF conversion is common with 4wd dual cab utes. Definitely transfers more NVH through to the cabin. No way would I go for an SMF conversion on a passenger vehicle for normal driving.
Cheers
A neighbour of mine owned a Nissan Navara that he had fitted with a SMF during a clutch change. The dealership warned him prior that he would have gearbox noise. He didn't trust them & went ahead with the SMF. The very first time he started it the gearbox was quite noisy.
The ute had done less than 100,000km at the time & he decided to sell it. He didn't want to sell it privately because of the noise & took a big hit when he traded it.
