When I bought the Passat I asked and was told the same for it. I now use Penrite Enviro + 5w-30 which is a VW approved oil

They are both running on that and will continue to do so. If thats what the dealer wants its good enough for me
That's very much a motherhood statement you have made. Dealers say lots of things that aren't accurate & don't conform with the VW tech spec.

Diesel Vert has it nailed. I thank him because I couldn't be bothered writing all that stuff over-&-over correcting peoples misconceptions. It's all written in the owners manual.

About the only thing I can see missing is that 507.00 is compulsory for DPF equipped vehicles.

The reason dealers state 504.00/507.00 is because a reduce lubricant choice in the workshop reduces the possibility of user error & it reduces inventory as well (and a lot of them aren't aware of the lubricant options). In the UK, 502.00 (where applicable) is the standard, not the exception.

504/507 covers pretty much all bases, bar the 506.01-spec'd Transporters and Touaregs. It's been spec'd for the Australian market since around 2005.

If you want to stray away from it, be 100% certain you've chosen the correct specification for your engine.

As I understand it the stated oils are a minimum spec and you cant do any harm using the correct higher grade oil as Umai Naa says

The Polo manual actually states 504 for Longlife and 502 without longlife

The Passat needs 507 for the DPF Much easier just to stick with the good stuff for safety and just needing one bottle for top up.

With the fragility of VW motors I prefer to go by what the dealer says as I dont want to have to argue from a bad position if the proverbial hits the fan.
My original trouble was that it was only a 502 oil and was NOT an approved one.

From a warranty stand-point, everybody needs to cover themselves. Not just Volkswagen Australia and the dealerships, but the independant guys, and the owner of the car, too.

I suspect that from Volkswagen Australia's viewpoint, it would be "This is what we've spec'd the car with, and not using it MAY have implications down the track, if found to be the cause of a failure".

They're warranting your engine on the basis that you're using the oil that is correct for your car in this country. As I said earlier, I would be treading very carefully if straying away from what Volkswagen Australia is stipulating as the correct grade of oil for this market.

In what way do you mean I am using a different brand of oil but it is listed as an "Äpproved oil" on the ERWIN list of oil and also has the correct VW approval stamp on the pack.

What was put in mine was not only not approved but was a 10w 40 instead of 5w 30 and of a lower rating

I was more-or-less referring to those who are considering moving away from 504/507. Don't take it as me singling you out

If it's on the approved list, by all means use it if that's what you prefer.

AH now the truth comes out

In your message you said you bought Shell Helix ULTRA ( they have Shell helix ultra for $70 at repco which I bought to day,)

NOT what you show above which is ULTRA EXTRA which yes indeed is correct. Makes a difference when the right thing is written.

    Two totally different oils
