I understood the main advantage of the VW507 oil was to permit the extended service interval. So a 507 oil has more additives (detergents, etc). Probably worthwhile doing the next oil change a bit earlier (say 7.5k rather than 15k).

Engine noisiness is more likely due to a lower cetane diesel batch. DPF clogging is more likely with any pump diesel in Australia, since *none* of them meet the VW cetane specification CN51 for DPF cars, except by random fluke (australian diesel standard min CN46).

So do get yourself a cetane improving additive. (like Morey's diesel smoke killer)

Hillbilly, how could you possibly find out that the dealer had put in the wrong oil???? And why didn't you take it back to the dealer for a freebie fix????

It wasnt a dealer (I didnt say it was) and I had asked him if he used ÄPPROVED OIL" and he said he did After I got it back I asked for the exact specs of the oil and looked it up on ERWIN It wasnt approved.

In his favour he refunded me quite a lot of the money so am ok with it now but wont be burnt again

Low SAPS is another difference which makes life easier for the catalitic converter

Extended service intervals dont apply in Australia.

We work on time or distance services, Some of the non approved oils state NOT FOR ENGINES WITH DPF Hence the reason to get the right one

    Extended service is actually a variable interval (QG0 & QG2 IIRC) between 15k-29k & 12-24 months.

Our 15k intervals are the std fixed interval (QG1) & 7.5k is "severe service"

DPF I think. Isn't 507.00 mandatory for DPF no matter what the interval? What would you & I know? We have the superior petrol fuel ;-p

    Exactly! LOL

I love diesel for applications needing huge torque (industrial) or for frequent/long driving (new little turbo diesels with DSG can get down to 4.5L per 100km!!) but when it comes to enjoyable motoring, give me petrol baby!

Well I have both a Diesel and a petrol and the service intervals are 15,000k or 12 months FOR BOTH

and 504-507 apparently is advised for EVERYTHING after 2008 You can use a higher grade oil than recommended in most engines but

dont get caught using wrong grade if engine has problems as dealers have been known to do an oil test on failed ones to see if that contributed to problem
    Hence why I changed mine

    Time and Distance regime:

    • Fixed 15 000 km or 12 month interval.
    • 502.00/505.00 compulsory.
    • 505.01 compulsory for PD TDI, CR TDI and some petrol engines.
    • 506.01 compulsory for some R5 TDI and V10 TDI engines.
    • 504.00/507.00 optional.

    LongLife regime:

    • Variable 15 000 - 30 000 km or 12 - 24 month intervals, as determined by the vehicle.
    • 506.01 compulsory for some R5 TDI and V10 TDI engines.
    • 504.00/507.00 compulsory.

Australian delivered vehicles are switched to the Time and Distance service regime, irrespective of what's stated on the vehicle data sticker.

    Lubricant notes:

    • 502.00/505.00 is available in a variety of viscosity grades; 10W-40, 5W-40, 0W-40, 5W-30, 0W-30.
    • 504.00/507.00 is, to date, only available with a viscosity grade of 5W-30.
    • TDI engines with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) must use 504.00/507.00, irrespective of service regime.*

*Except for some R5 TDI and V10 TDI engines, which must use 506.01 depending on the build date.

All I can say is that when I bought the Polo in 2010 I asked what oil it used and was given a Castrol brochure and told to use the longlife Professional 504-507 5w-30 and NOTHING ELSE except those specs.

When I bought the Passat I asked and was told the same for it. I now use Penrite Enviro + 5w-30 which is a VW approved oil

They are both running on that and will continue to do so. If thats what the dealer wants its good enough for me
