Help - Accidentally put Petrol in Diesel Tank

Hi Guys
Unfortunately I was operating on auto pilot yesterday and after driving my wife’s petrol car for a few weeks I inadvertently put 10l of Petrol into my Diesel Tiguan. I drove it for a km or so before I realised. The car is now parked whilst I work out what to do with it.

Is there any way of siphoning the petrol from the tank?

I have seen a video of someone accessing the fuel pump under the rear seat of a Jetta and removing the pump which would allow access to the tank to siphon the fuel. Would this work on a Tiguan?

Is there another way of getting the petrol out?

There are mobile services available which will come to you and pump out the incorrect fuel. Can't vouch for any in particular but just do a google.

Once you've got it resolved I would recommend something like 'Solo diesel' which prevents the ability to insert a petrol nozzle into a diesel filler.

If you want to DIY you can disconnect the fuel filter in the engine bay and use VCDS to run the fuel pump to empty the fuel into a suitable container. Or you can remove the in tank pump and pump it out yourself. That's under the rear seat. Just make sure you also replace the fuel filter in the engine bay also.

Given you didn't drive it until failure it's likely going to be a case of 'no blood, no foul' at least that's been my experience with other similar incidents with friends.

Hey mate the VCDS option sounds like the better one. I dont have one but supercheap auto have them for $99.

Am likely to damage the fuel pump by running petrol through it.

Once I have changed the filter I gather I fill the filter enclosure with fresh diesel. Do I need to prime anything else with Diesel or should that be sufficient.

VCDS is not a generic OBD reader. You won't be able to run the pump with a generic reader. OBD11 will also work.
If you're worried about the fuel pump you can dilute the petrol with some diesel but it should be fine as it will get purged with diesel soon anyway.

Yes once filter is replaced you can put fresh diesel into the housing. Then just cranking it should be enough to get the fuel system back up to pressure and running.

Hi mate. It was 10 litres. I texted my mechanic and he said if it were 5l would be ok but 10 he wasnt sure. I ended up taking the fuel pump out from the tank and siphoned it all out. Is running fine now. Cheers

I believe The RAA here in SA sells 'Solo Diesel Fuel Cap' but the compatibility chart only goes to MK6 so not sure if it will fit MK7.5.

Any idea if they are compatible with MK7.5 ?
Also is there any other alternative to preventing someone from using petrol on a diesel car?

Our MY21 Tiguan 147TDI has a misfuelling device from the factory as standard.

Also our MY16.5 Landrover Discovery Sport has a misfuelling device as standard.

These make motoring hassle free for us particularly after the GLW did miss fuel our previous Mk5 Jetta TDI with 52L of petrol. Fortunately no damage but it cost $250 for the drain and $70 odd at the time for the petrol
