    stay tuned

we can help you nurse the engine a while further but in terms of fixing the problem you are probably better off buying a new (second hand) long motor. If you want to bite the bullet and rebuild the old engine it will involve lots of work and it will always be a 1.5. Having said that I love my 1.5 and a few have said that if they can be made strong enough to take the horsepower they rev like crazy. The easy way out is to buy a 1.9 in a box with a five speed attached.

Surely you could stall the engine by putting it in gear and putting the brakes on? Or driving into a wall. That way you have to replace the engine

    Block the Intake

Transporter is right many earlier diesels simply blocked air to the engine with a baffle in the intake operated by a cable to stop the engine. This was before fandangled electric fuel shutoff solenoids. Dropping the vehicle into gear could cause serious damage to other components not to mention dangerous to anyone around the vehicle.

not really mate - its not all bad news. a ring set will set you back less than $200, and if you're keen to give it a go (you can do it with engine in car) you could pull the sump, head and pistons, and just re-ring the engine and give the head a clean up. all you would need in parts is a headgasket and the rings, and you'd learn a LOT along the way. even the humble haynes is good enough to get you through something like this.

with diligence and care ,you could do it in a weekend if the pistons and bores aren't bad it will go many more trouble free km's. .. or there's Andrew's scenario

I have become a bit anal in my old age and my OCD is becoming worse I wouldn't be able to help myself and I would zero time it. Id forgotten how hard it was with my first cars especially getting into this Golf now.

That being said gldgti is right it would be a very good learning experience for you lawny, and with a digital camera and some help from the manual and the forum It can be done in a reasonable time at a very reasonable cost if everything is ok internally.

just before you pull the motor to bits there is one other potential cause of this problem. If your brake booster diaphram is leaking, the vacuum pump will instead of providing vaccum will pump air. The vacuum pump discharge is to the crankcase. The crankcase vents to the inlet via the camshaft cover which is full of atomised oil off the cam lobes. You will hopefully have noticed how awful your brakes are if this is the culprit

and i would be very cautious putting new round rings in oval bores. remember that the rings that are in there have worn with the bore and will probably fit better than a new set.
