I've added 56L and the DTE hadn't gone into -- mode yet. I'm assuming the pump was inaccurate or the fuel tank is a fraction bigger than VW make out.

All you diesel guys should either be able to burp the tank (button next to the filler) or modify the vent system up near the fuel filler to accept a few more litres if you are going on a long run in the sticks.

I get 10 extra litres when venting the tank on my Polo using the little button. It can't be done on the newer VW's without modding

A couple of weeks ago I drove to Melbourne and back in my new (had 800km on the clock when I left) Golf Mk7 Tdi. I got 5.6 going down and 5.7 coming back (MFD). It was raining in Vic on the return, and was house to house so some slower driving at each end. I drove on cruise all the way using +5kph on the speedo/MFD. I had determined the 5kph error earlier using sat nav. Also confirmed the error on the return journey by timing two 5km stretches. Is this ok for a new/tight engine or should I have got better economy?

Seems reasonable given the rolling terrain and should improve as the engine runs in.

Just bear in mind that the MFD may not be accurate (with both our Golf and Polo, it seems to be 10% optimistic)

Also agree with the MFD being 10% optimistic with our Polo and Yeti and that's running fairly high tyre pressures. Long-term we go improvements of about 0.5L/100km. Took 20,000 in common rail Yeti. Seemed a lot slower to improve in PD Polo - presume to do with higher compression?

Long-term recent average about 7.3L/100km in our 2.0TDI. Haven't done a long drive for a while, but maybe less than 5L/100km highway on MFD.

I thought cruise and constant rpm is best avoided while running in for the first 1000-1500km. See for example How to properly break in an engine with a focus on the VW TDI or Running in a new diesel

Our new Polo still has the vent button. Ventectomy was good on the old one. Yeti has no vent button.

Re the inaccurate speedo - has anyone checked by GPS the accuracy of their (Yeti) odometer.
Our Pug's speedometer is out/over by the 'standard' 5kph but the odometer is extremely accurate.

Thanks for the responses. I feel reassured. However, I will be mindful of running it in a bit more carefully. The dealer just said drive it!

You really shouldn't use cruise control on a new engine. You shouldn't be driving for economy either. You're supposed to vary the revs & try & load the engine

Which way did you go, Hume or Monaro / Princes?

We drove up to the NSW/ACT border (Colinton) on the Easter weekend (in a 2006/7 125kw Passat.)
We headed up on the Princes and Monaro HWYs, at one point we had an avg consumption around 4.9 and looked to be on track for just over 1300kms from the tank... Then we hit the mountains lol.
When we finally fuelled up in Canberra we had done ~1050kms and had 60kms DTE. i think I put in around ~55L soooo roughly 5.3avg.
Thats without a lot of the city driving aka avg killing aka diesel wastage you'd have enjoyed.

On a side note, what's this vent thing you guys are talking about? I've never seen an extra button next to my filler cap (not that I've looked that hard, not that I'm going to now either as its raining lol)
