Fuel tank not filling to full. blocked?

My MY08 diesel is 48,000 kms old (mostly highway tbh) and last night my MFD was showing 50km till empty which is roughly the time at which i go and fill up. When i do fill up, i put the bowser hose away when it first shuts off, not wanting to overfill the tanks.

Last night it showed i had only put in 35L or so, and was shutting off. I figured maybe i had one of those dodgy hoses that shuts off all the time but it was fine. this is a servo i fill up at very regularly too.

was it some physical build up or a gas pocket maybe? after a few minutes i was able to put in the 52L i normally get to put in. just figured i'd throw it out there and ask...

What fuel were you using, Dyldo?

Some diesel fuels foam more than others. And the foam can fill the tank. The size of nozzle, the way the fuel falls from the nozzle: all can cause excessive foam.

Other diesel fuels have additives to cut the foaming. Example, BP Ultimate Diesel.

Its a Shell Diesel, and i know their diesel tanks turnover every 2 days approx as they are a high diesel traffic site. The 52L of Shell Diesel went on top of what little BP Diesel that was in the tank prior to filling. if that helps...

It's just foaming, I've had that the few times I filled with no name diesels around the place, but have never had a problem with BP. All you could do if you're stuck to using Shell is to fill it a little more slowly than flat out, just so it doesn't have another froth attack.

For big fun, you should try a high flow truck nozzle, takes about 5 minutes to dribble it into the car!

Foaming in diesel fuel has nothing to do with how old the fuel is. It's just the nature of a hydrocarbon liquid with molecules about that size.

Anti-foaming additives cost money. So cheap diesel fuel generally doesn't have anti-foaming additives. BP Ultimate diesel does.
