All fixed, the compoments in general were dirty but no where near like the photos in Gregs thread. They cleaned the flap & replaced the valve ( the diagpharm was buggered) & all seems fine now.

I like my VW cars but I am becoming less than impressed with the way VW wants to treat its customers. Warehousing in Singapore may be cheaper for VW but waiting 8 days for parts is not really acceptable from the customer point of view. The 103 is my daughter's car and she leaves London tonight returning to Australia. Almost tempted to pick up a valve in London and deliver it to the dealer on Thursday morning.

Spot on. Service Department had notes on failure. To be a little fair, he did say it was the first failure they had seen at this dealership. Still no excuse for 8 and now at least 9 days for parts to be sourced

Rang the dealer today to get ETA on parts. 15 minutes holding on the phone and he came back with. "Your part has arrived but they sent the wrong part. There are two versions of this valve. One is electric and one is belt driven. Yours is electric and they have sent the belt driven version."

Anyone know if there are two versions for the MK VI TDI 103. Two alternative types or is one an "upgrade"? Or is one for the PD engine and one for the CR.

With any sort of luck it will only be another 10 days before the correct part arrives. Left to wonder ifnit was a dealer or supplier issue as to why the wrong part was sent.

I was assured (by the service desk) that driving with the exhaust gas warning light on solid will have no detrimental effect on the vehicle or its components but its going down in my diary notes in case of any "premature" (100000- 130000 km say) failures of exhaust related parts. Exact words were "No dramas driving the car".

Have asked for confirmation from techs rather than believe the man in the collar and tie.

Any advice from here. Car does on average about 500 kms per week.

Hi all
My wife was driving the golf (05 2.0tdi) today when the exhaust warning lamp came on with the exhaust workshop warning in the mfd. The car seems to drive fine with no change in the performance, the light is still on after the car had cooled down ( I ran it when I got home. The book says to take it to the dealer, any advice?

& yes I have done a search & couldn't find anything relevant.

Have now been told there are two valves in the system. One belt driven and one electrically operated.

Both are required. Apparently it I the belt driven valve that has failed in our case.

Asking further as to what is the function of the valve... via Chinese whispers... Tech to service desk to me... it allows water to circulate and cool exhaust gases.

So new to diesels that my knowledge base is apalling but looks like I will be learning fast.

I was simply looking for any advice from the wealth of knowledge on this forum before talking to the dealer. Sorry to hear of your dramas Highlander, we had our golf home the next day, just the overnight stay at vw.

Ahhh, OK, it's the water cooling of the exhaust gas that has failed Highlander, so basically the car is getting hotter than normal exhaust gas, car will be down on power, that's all, economy will suffer a bit as a result. I agree it wouldn't be too harmful, but it's odd the 103 flap is belt driven, the one on the 125 is electronic, but it is a totally different system.

What model / year is the car mate, I don't know of anything sub MK6 in 103kw that had a DPF..... and extra exhaust gas, or hotter than normal, or lack thereof due to a faulty EGR valve won't hurt the DPF, would help keep temps up if anything else and burn off a bit more carbon! The health of the turbo, well that's a different story..... but not a problem in your case Highlander.
