My VRS Skoda developed a whistle after being tuned - it went away (mostly) when I upgraded the intercooler

That would create concerns (water loss) and needs to be promptly resolved - time to go to a different workshop

Now I'm worried, though it doesn't leak and water levels/oil levels are fine. Not much change in a month its been happening now.

I'm quite frustrated with it because I don't seem to be getting anywhere with my mechanic, he's great but with issues like this I've found he's not much good for solving problems.

Who in anyone's opinion would be best to go to and sort this out rather than splashing money here and there on things with no resolve.

white(ish) smoke can be caused by oil, but your car has a dpf and really, any smoke at all is abnormal.

I would take it to a VW specialist.

Can you smell anything, specifically oil. A leak in the MK6 PCV system could cause a high pitched noise.

Can you smell exhaust up under the engine bay, only because there is a EGR filtration system down behind the DPF in the MK6, a leak in that would make a funny whistle especially under boost. Heat would make a metal flange leak expand etc etc, and like Adian has said, no white smoke should get through a DPF ( white smoke will clog is quicker and it would be regenning more often though! ) but it could be getting through the EGR system.

As much as you say you don't think it is a boost leak, everytime I blew an intercooler plumbing boot, and I did it many times, it sounded like a vacuum cleaner on steroids. Given it gets worse hot, it must be a hard part that heats up, expands, and then leaks, say an intercooler plastic end tank....

Is the sound always there, even barely, or is it totally related to boost?

I do get exhaust smell coming into the cabin sometimes if the A/C is turned off and i just have the fans going.
My problem is it doesn't sound when in park, only under load so while driving.

A diesel specialist I took it to did a cool trick where he had the breaks on just enough to put load on the engine while accelerating next to a big wall in an industrial park so he could get a better understanding of the sound.

I believe it may be the flange leak you mention as it only starts once the engine is hot. Are you able to give me a decent understanding of where it is so that I could get my hands dirty and maybe take a look myself?

Sadly they charge 150 an hour and I cant afford that atm(Rego and insurance round the corner as well as next service), if it takes them 4 hours to diagnose the problem that's 600 and they may not even find the problem.
I'm not one to throw money at something until its fixed which is why I'm on here, for some decent ideas and maybe some DIY.

Seems like I live in the wrong state all you TDI guys are up in qld...
