Fraid so MSR, but on the upside you petrol guys don't need to run as full on a can, and any half decent catch can will be a huge benefit. Of course the Provent is by far the market leader, but if I had a normal GTI etc I'd just run a quality can that has a 2.0 T FSI specific PCV plate such as BSH, 42DD and I think Forge have one??

"I finally did it" as well and cleaned the EGR and the throttle body(TB) in my T5, after almost 85,000km. I was expecting much more sludge inside, especially inside the manifold, spraying inside while the engine is running is not really as effective and where the cleaning chemical is not directly hitting the surface it doesn't remove much. So, I removed the TB for proper cleaning especially around the EGR valve and the TB flap.

That's a lot less buildup than my TDI had!

I,m new to this Forum but have read all this thread. Is there an award for that? Being serious now, we have a 2005 TDI with the 1.9 engine, While it is very hard to see I think it has the EGR. Are they a problem with this engine? it has done 66,000ks. Now getting a bit hard to start when cold, but has its original battery.

Your engine has an EGR and the hard start could be related to the aging battery but also to many other things. Depending where you're in Adelaide I could help you to diagnose it, if you like.

Thanks very much for the offer, it did start very quick yesterday after being parked in the sun for a few hours. Do the glow plugs give trouble? I can't even see them let alone check them. May try testing battery voltage through glow plug cycle, should see a voltage drop if they are working. Also the intake manifold must be a nightmare to get off as it is on the back of the engine, I can see that it is alloy and not plastic though.
BTW to clean carbon from a plastic manifold use a caustic soda solution, (NaOH) but you would have to remove the part first.

Checked battery voltage: Nothing switched on - 12.4V, Ignition on 11.3V, (glow plugs I hope) Cranking 8.6V, which tells me the battery is pretty weak. Is a wonder that it continues to start with that much voltage drop. Time to look for a new battery. Just wish the batteries in my 4WD would last 6 years.

I wonder if anybody got this kit for mkV TDI2.0: EGRvalve.co.uk - Kits 2009 ? I'm not sure if this is legal.. An insurance company might refuse cover if this thing is detected after the accident..

It's the commercial version of what I have made. Please heed all I have said about EGR keeping EGT's under control. If you go bung one on without an EGT gauge in the VERY least, good luck with your VNT turbo....

Remember I saw 812 degrees in my STOCK setup....and that's scary enough!

My local VW service manager is a South African... I asked if they can fit a provent. I used phrases like "I've read" and "could it be beneficial"... you should have seen the look on his face. He could out "disapprove-stare" my Grandma!

Needless to say for the 50,00km service the provent is comming off and it'll be in stock form again.
