Some posters there soak it in the brake fluid for 3 days and than wash it of with degreaser. Some use kerosene and hot soapy water. Of course parts removed from engine.
These were very high mileage engines with + 170,000 km.
I used to deal with similar carbon build-ups in the aircraft industry.
We had a 2000L tank of heated >brain faid< (some type of drain cleaner that came in flakes & stunk). The heat was quite high - maybe 10c below boiling. We would throw the parts in overnight and close the lid. Take it out the next day & blast it with a steam cleaner. Repeat the process until most of it was gone & give it to the bead blasters to finish it off.
