I heard that the diesel crank is stronger and more knife edged. But plenty of diesel bottom ends got petrol heads, so the other way could work.
Hey All dieselers,
I'm looking for a crank for my newfound diesel. (not found yet, as i haven't picked it up from the loon).
I've read on the forum that a petrol crank is the same. Is this for the 1.5 petrol, or the 1.6?
The thing is, i've got a 1.6 engine lying around, but otherwise i need a crank.
SO
If the 1.6 crank is the same (which i suspect it's not), then it's all good, but otherwise, who's got a spare crank they'd be willing to give away... or sell.
Cheers
Smithy

The difference between the 1500 and 1600 is only the bore. The stroke is 80mm for both.
Which means, i can use the crank from my old 1600LS..
What does everyone think?

Brackie? Anyone know if a petrol crank will work?

Yeah. I pmed Smithy when he first asked the question. As far as I know it will. The blocks have the same bottom end dimensions (mains etc) and the big end journals, conrods and shells are the same so I can't see why not. Smithy, if you're serious about using the petrol crank I'll email a guy I know in the States who "wrote the book" on VW diesels and knows diesel Rabbits inside out. He'll know for sure.
I guess i'm serious unless someone is interested in selling me a diesel crank for cheap, or if i pick this engine up this arvo and i think i can do something with the old one (which loon tells me is not worth it.)

Tassie euro mk1 and gtimk5 both have diesel motors sans head in their sheds. Talk to them.
Go the cheap petrol crank option and tell us how you get on.

According to the ETKA the crank will fit but it depends on the engine code the crank came out of.
I'm not familar with the Australian delivered 1.6L codes, but it looks like if the crank & rods are out of a EG,EJ,EM,FN,FV & FR Petrol code then it will be O.K.
But it needs the toothed crank pulley from the diesel.
I can email you the pictures & text for what ever model year your engine is as I don't know how to post/change MDI format pictures.
I'm not 100% sure, but I thought the petrol and diesel cranks were the same.
Australia had FN engines.
