From that picture it looks like it was mixed with the waste oil. They should get the sample analyzed. But insurance paid, so why would they bother?

If the DPF karks it you have no choice but to replace it. The car wouldn't run without it, and even if it would, EPA would fine you substantially more for deliberately taking it off than the cost of replacement.

Yeah - I was originally going to buy the GT TDI, but the final choice of GTI seems much better now......

A friend got the algae in his Patrol. He hadn't used it for 10 months due to illness, then started it up and it ran like a pig. End result was around $8,000 to fix. Drop and clean tank, replace all filters, replace injector pump, replace all injectors.

Sure makes petrol seem a far better choice.

Nice one George, the TSI "lads" will love you for that one! For the record, as of the weekend, my EGR has no chance of blocking up, ever. Still more to come there...

I have little intention of replacing the DPF long term, the ludicrous price just makes the choice easier. There's a way around everything, and well, I'll worry about that at the time. With the active bypass I have planned my DPF will get quite a life extension anyhow, as it won't see flat out soot anymore.

And Gerhard, if you are a metro type, who doesn't get his hands dirty, you're right you have no choice. Me, well I've already thought up three. The car will indeed run without it, with a few simple mods, and there's always ways to have your car run a "certain" way for the slim chance you actually get checked for emissions. If they actually enforced that, we'd lose about 20% of the cars on the roads, and decrease our pollution massively. Hey, I'm ALL for it, but it just doesn't happen. I could only hope.

I'm also glad you're as happy with your choice as I am with mine. Still.

    Thumbs down

Gee that scares me, and i'm sorry someone had to be the guinea pig. I will now have to pay attention to this- although in Provinces difficult, i has previously just thought, " High traffic" servos were preferable, without worrying about brand.Ive had 3 tanks in the car from new,all from different servo's.Safeway(Caltex) and Liberty- assume these are not the preferred brands of choice then?

Buy BP, since it has the highest CN (cetane no.), buy from one servo if possible and keep the receipts.

That's what I try to do, that way if I have trouble it will be the servo paying for the fix, not me. Most of my trips are less than 900km return, so I can buy nearly all my fuel from my local BP.

I think the first poster has been very unlucky.

A few other posts have indicated another caution for buying diesel vehicles.

My old diesel ute I first purchased new in 1991 has never had an issue with
algae or any contaminates after almost 400000k's, and this ute has been
all over the country refueling at tiny little country servo's and never a problem.

From the pic it looks like waste oil has been added and this is something you
would get away with if used in a large semi but as our poster has found not
    in a modern diesel car.

So thinking because the servo sells diesel to lots of trucks is no guarantee the quality of diesel.

The algae issue usually only rears its ugly head if the vehicle or tank has been sitting around for months
with a half empty tank letting the bacteria develope.

Its a shame you could not get the sample and confront the servo.

Greg- thanks for the tip, is that BP STD Diesal or "Ultimate", which if higher grade is unlikely my local(Country) BP will have ?
