I have been using this in my 103kW Passat for a few months now. Can't say that I have noticed many benefits over the standard stuff tho.. My fuel economy around town is low 7's and on the open road is low 6's.

    Anyone else noticed any benefits?

You're right. But from what I have read about Diesel here in Aus on the Fuel websites (Shell, BP, Caltex) all of their standard diesel fuels are "Low Sulphur" but that is more to do with Aus fuel regulation.

While Perth is enjoying BP Ultimate, in Sydney you can get Caltex's Vortex Premium Diesel.

The info on the website is all marketing bollocks really but the attendant at Gladesville told me it was just a higher cetane rating.

The price difference? Compared to my local stations (who are 50m apart so the competition keeps the prices decent) is it only around 2-3c more.

Economy and Performance? Well this is only my second tank but I think the economy is a little better, maybe 20-40 km and as for performance, who knows.

It just makes sense to get the best grade fuel for you car, that's why I do it

P.S. The Merrylands pump is High-Flow only

I think it's exactly the same diesel as the non-ultimate version so therefore shouldn't be any cleaner.

They just put an additive into it to boost the cetane rating a bit. It's just like the additve that brings petrol up to a higher octane rating.

    Justified or not?

    BP was selling Ultimate at 179.9 yesterday. Generally it is 5-6c a litre more anyway, but I couldn't justify it when I found it at 164.9 - 53l x 15c = $7.90

Price of diesel is now more than a bad joke....

I reckon everyone needs to send e-mails to the NRMA or equivalent each week as I am doing until they start lobbying for diesel and not just petrol

Roobuls, yr not correct there. 98 is refined differently, takes longer through the refining process, its not just an additive

BP Summer Hill is usually good, around 164.

If you shop at woolies, they have a new rewards card that replaces the petrol docket & gives a 1st time only 10c/l off.

I realise 98 is refined differently. What I meant was that there were once some after-market octane booster additives available.
I know that BP adds an additive to their diesel because I work as a Mech Eng Draftie and I drew up the new additive tank that was installed at the BP site to put additive into the diesel.
I don't work for BP any more but if you live in Perth I can give you dierections to where it's located and you can drive past and see the additive tank from the road.

The "additives" you refer to are detergents (for want of a better word), not octane booster. Unlike Optimax (now V-power) which is basically unleaded with an octane booster added. BP ultimate is refined to a 98octane, then detergents added. Vpower and mobil 8000 are ULP with octane boosters PLUS detergents added later.

Why would the other two do that? Because it's cheaper (to produce).
