I'm fairly sure a sizeable percentage of the Vortex diesel around Newcastle is (at least was) bio.
A few weeks ago my local Metro service station, which has been supplying biodiesel for at least as long as I've lived in Gosford (6-7 years) had 'out of order' on their bio pumps. This happened occasionally when they had run out etc, but after they were still out of order after a week, I asked the person at the counter what was going on - unfortunately for them, it seemed that they had had a mis-fuelling accident on a grand scale, whereby several kilo-litres of unleaded had been pumped into the not yet empty biodiesel tank, and they were in the middle of fixing it.
Now, 4 weeks on, the pump was back online, so I filled eagerly as I have really noticed the extra noise associated with using regular diesel over the last month, and have been keen to get back on bio.
Anyway, into the shop to pay, only to find out in discussion with the person behind the counter that in fact, they now just have regular diesel in that tank too - because apparently, their main distributor, Mobil, has advised (though not mandated) that they discontinue stocking it.
The reasons why were unclear - the guy I spoke with is at least the main manager of the servo, perhaps even the owner, but after a 3-4 minute discussion with him (it was quiet and night time) it sounded like Mobil had suggested that some people had had problems due to the use of bio and they didn't want to take the risk of supplying it.
After expressing my disappointment, (especially since I've now being buying about 55L/week for 6 years with no fuel related problems at all), he said he would query his supplier more about it and said he would consider stocking it again.
My concern is primarily that I wont be able to buy it locally any more, and second, what will this do to bio production plants around NSW? I know there are more than you can turn up with a quick google, as there's one on the central coast that the company I work for has supplied pipeline parts for.
Anyone heard anything about biodiesel in the news recently?
