Cars are fine to drive with blown intercooler hoses - had a few unplanned "tests" recently - it's just very underpowered, noisy, and you make a lot of noise yet go nowhere. Remember it's blowing OUT, no way you could get stuff back in on the turbo outlet side. You feel like a tool driving it very far so you just wouldn't. Inlet is a different story....
for any noob readiing this - DIESEL cars are fine to drive with a blown intercooler hose.

This noob will take that into account if I ever encounter any more bangs accompanied by high pressure gas leakage

OK so my local dealer tried to tell me the hose is worth $380 and $650 all up to repair it.. Pretty sure a hose isnt worth anywhere near that much. I'm going to try and find the part number and buy/fit it elsewhere.

Mate call Enzed, Pirtek or any hydraulic hose fitter. Would cost a fifth of that even with callout. You will however need to have the AC regassed at an AC place.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but why would petrol be any different unless it's blow through carb?

A guess might be that fuel mixture in a diesel is no where near as bad as a petrol if it goes badly wrong...?

Turbo just pushes air in direct injection, or in fact any injection engine really - perhaps not the last few cm. Both would overfuel, but would be kinda drivable to the edge of the road kind of thing. I'm not suggesting you head off across the Nulla'....
