    Just to clarify, there is only one female spline as part of the pulley assembly. You are correct with the rest of your instructions as is asa572.
    Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

    Whenever I've done an alternator, I've not taken wheels, etc off. You can usually get everything out from up top.

    But in this case, if you've got a mess to clean up then yeah, no harm in being thorough.
