Have heard only good things from them, so hopefully they can shed osme light.
Mike Webber Prestige and Performance are pretty good too (Coorparoo). I have used Mike for some trouble shooting and have had positive results. My view is that the "independent" mechanics, and generally the ones that people have recommended, are much better at true "problem solving". If you want an oil change when the car in under warranty then go to VW, but I have never had good results with a true "difficult" problem getting solved by a car dealer mechanic. I've always had to get an independent to find the fault, or use the internet and copious hours of time. In some ways I think the independent mechanic relies on word of mouth, so they try harder, but also, even when they are stumped, their hourly rate or parts cost is normally less so they seem to get further into the solution.
For example...Mike Webber did a 60K service on my 06 2L TDI including DSG, as well as cleaned out and tested my air flow meter and tested the EGR flap, as well as a few other things (found the cause of a long term intermittent warning light that kept annoying me)...he did everything for $860, and VW wanted $1150 (I think..or more) for the service ALONE!
Have heard good things about Jmac too, but haven't used him personally.
Good luck!
Tony

if there is a vane sticking, its possible the turbo is trying to over boost and you can hear it surging. Surge is always seen at low revs, high load. The VNT is one of the best candidates for surge capability just because they spool so well.... Having said that, if you really have lost power then I would first call a boost leak. Boost leaks can sound like all kinds of different noises, depending on where they are coming from, how large they are, how close to the firewall it is, orientation, boost levels reached, etc etc etc. Also, boost leaks are common, especially among new diesels that run high boost pressures and that have intercoolers and lots of boost piping.

Stan (top bloke, top service) from Euro Aus mechanics took a look at the car this morning. Small oil leak from intercooler piping. Because he's unable to do warranty work he sent me to Austral. He thinks it's likely the vanes sticking.
How did this pan out in the end? Did Austral have the same opinion of the problem and did they fix it up under warranty?
Car is out of warranty unfortunately. Selling the car asap, and going to look for a 182 cup. Would love a mk5 gti but the Renault is basically the best BFB in my price range.
Gearbox is also giving up slowly. Horrible grinding and shuddering when I take off now. Gearbox oil has just been changed tooThis car has been nothing but problematic lately. Air con unit, DSG clunkiness/noise and turbo impeller blades

Well if you think the reliability of the VW is bad, good luck with the Renault!

Mate, I'd be looking at current Polo GTIs .... they are much quicker and nicer than the Clios once a little tuning magic has been done. Lightly modded Polo GTIs will do an easy 6.0s 0-100km/h and by far outrun a Clio, even a tuned 182 .....
Do some suspension work and the Polo will have the Clio in the corners as well.
As a bonus, they are now getting seriously cheap and their engines are bulletproof.... best bang for your buck around at the moment by far ...

One mate of mine in brisbane has a chipped polo gti and another mate of mine in Melbourne has a Renault Clio sport 2L (a few years old now), so I'll give you a few observations.
Overall: The Polo gti is a great car. You simply cannot get better bang for your buck with that car. It flies, and it is well built. When chipped it really becomes a weapon. My mate drives it hard and the car just doesn't dissapoint.
The Renault Clio: It is a <80K vehicle that is punishing it's owner with regular accelerator hardware faults, a cracked radiator, seatbelt issues, broken seat latches, power steering issues, fanbelt failures etc. Little items like fan belts are items that do need replacing on any car, but the cost of replacement is extreme. The replacement of the radiator isn't easy either, considering that Renault don't actually carry one in Australia, so if you wanted a genuine one you would have your car on blocks for 3-4 weeks. My mate would never by another Renault, and I have heard that from other ex-Renault owners too. Basically, the Renault Clio is a typically French car: Goes like a cut snake, handles well, but suffers from unreliability issues. French cars are known as some of the most unreliable in the world from what I've heard (Top Gear seem to pan them regularly).
I think you've have a bad run with your VW, and I don't blame you if you wouldn't go with VW again, but watch out for those Renaults...I'd hate to see you jump out of the frying pan into the fire! If you aren't opposed to a Polo then go give one a try. They are ridiculously cheap for what you get.
