piezo/voltage....could there be a battery voltage link?
just a thought that a new battery could be a 'preventative' measure?

ooops, I changed my 'settings' and got lost in time.....ignore as usual )))

Thanks guys but had a new battery put in place 2 months back. Was purchased from RACQ at the behest of VW BUNDABERG, who then set it up via their vagcom etc

Aren't there any rebuilders who can swap out the injectors for a few hundred each? Sounds like the PD owners need to be really careful with their engine oil. I didn't know that engine oil was going in the injectors. I guess it makes sense, after they took the sulfur out of the diesel fuel. On my HEUI truck, the engine oil fires the injectors, and I was told to be really careful with the engine oil.

    Hi there,

I need some advice related to my VW 2010 Caravelle diesel. On Saturday my wife was driving with the 4 kids and the engine lost power - coil light came on, engine light, stopped running in the middle of the road. Luckily she was moving fast enough and there was space to pull over as it was a busy road. Towed it but VW was closed so it went to a euro car specialist in Sydney on Saturday. Monday he cleaned it, test drove it, and put it on the computer - said injector 4 was causing problems. Suggested I replace all 4 - but it's only a 2010 with 48,000KM on it...so I thought that was a bit extreme ($3000).

So - I googled this issue (I'm no car expert trust me) and found a slew of articles of people dying, hundreds of owners being affected by the same problem caused by faulty injectors in other models. Took it from the euro mechanic and dropped it at VW, annoyed as we normally service it there and they never told us the injectors were a problem. The service guy said it was only the Golf affected, and that "only one person died" so there was no recall. They kept the car for a couple days and said it had 'lost calibration' with a 'incorrect deviation balance of injector on cylinder 4'. Said he did some kind of software update and it should be fine now - but I am very reluctant to put my kids in the car if this thing is likely to fail again and cause the vehicle to lose power. He said the only way to find out was to drive it again. We asked them to replace the injectors but they refused.

Is this thing safe to drive?

    Thanks,

    James

    Hi James

Do you happen to have the engine code?

VW would know if your car was affected by the recall or not and considering they said it wasn't and gave you a separate issue after a couple of days, it sounds like a legitimate response to me.

Recalling the woman who died in Melbourne in the Golf on the freeway, she was in a petrol manual car and the speed of her accident, in my humble opinion, she got very unlucky. I have also had a higher speed accident in the same generation Golf at double the impact speed and I walked away. While I am not the care giver of your family and children, I don't think the car will kill them.

Can you let VW use it for a couple of days, drive it around themselves?

They claim there is nothing wrong that it was just an 'imbalance' - seems to be driving fine now, was just concerned they were ignoring faulty injectors as the media articles implied they recalled them in other countries and the problem we had was identical. Will advise if it resurfaces.

    Yeah fair call.

The fact they sent letters to all the owners of cars with this issues means they won't ignore the injector issue.

Ah well, here's to more dubbin

Not so fast though - was in the van with three of my kids this morning after dropping my wife at the airport, lost power while driving 60kmh and changing lanes, nearly killed the lot of us as the car behind me was coming up fast and had to brake as I couldn't accelerate at all. Had to coast to the side, restart the engine, then slowly pulled off the main road and found a safe place to call a tow. Coil light was on the whole time. By the time the tow truck got it to VW Artarmon it was back to normal, was able to park it. But not safe to drive.

Thing that worries me the most is they don't seem to have any idea what the problem is so even though they say it is fixed they are pretty non-committal about whether or not it is actually safe. The fact that the problem is the same problem the golfs had worries me, as they didn't want to admit to that until someone died. I'd say we came pretty close today. As I said when I brought up the article, the guy (Michael) in the VW Service desk said "only one person died" so I'm not convinced they are concerned with my safety, the are concerned with how much they have to pay to solve the issue.

What are my rights here? Will they just make me change every moving part until the problem goes away? It's only at 2010 with about 50K km on it.
