How'd I miss all this VNT action!
Makes me what to upgrade my old banger to a VNT17 or above. Luckily I have plenty of other projects to keep me busy![]()
Yes, after my driving with the vanes disabled, I think the 1.9 PD has plenty of torque off idle when off boost so I've ditched my plans to get a VNT-17 and will save up for a GTB1756 (plus plumbing)
I'm very interested in how this works out - my concern would be whether the reduction in outlet back pressure would increse the possibility of compressor surge.

I would have thought that reducing the dP across the compressor would help reduce surge. Compressor surge is the result of high dP and low flow rate (at least thats the way I read compressor eff. maps).
I used to get some surge with my old mk3 1.9, with the T3. It had a large compressor side, and when really loading up the engine at low engine speed (like a fast change from second to 3rd) the compressor would really howl (in that situation it could be pushing 23-25psi but at only 2000rpm, which was low flow for that compressor). Being a T3 i didn't worry too much as they are so chunky.
I have a viezu tune like you, I will likely be asking to have it adjusted for the gt17 - but what with the weight of the skoda and such, I think I will also be asking for limited boost below 2000rpm aswell![]()

Ordered CHRA (core housing rotor assembly) from Nkk turbo's in UK - highly recommended! Found them on ebay UK but dealt with via email (what I wanted was not listed).
Including freight I'm up for $420 for the CHRA.... add to that the $125 I put up for the turbo, I'm sitting pretty at $545 for what is effectively a brand new turbo![]()

Will you be upgrading your injector nozzles? I'm investigating this an intermediate step before upgrading the air flow side of things.

Yeah thats a good point Greg... not sure. I guess in the back of my mind I'm still trying to convince myself I'm not shooting for big power.... so I can only admit that I've entertained the thought, but nothing more.![]()
I have been wondering of late, though, about whether perhaps they are more necessary than I had thought - mainly because the exhaust is so smokey (compared to the cabby!) makes me think that the injectors are just being held open way too long rather than flowing more in a short period (As they would if there were bigger).
My personal experience upgrading nozzles on old IDI diesels has only been positive.... I reckon go for it
At this stage, I have been thinking that I would like to get it to about 130kW... if I can do that with just the gt17, exhaust and nozzles, I'll be happy.

Unfortunately, the track bug means my poor little PoD will never have enough power, hence investigating the 1756 (or even larger)
The North Americans swear by nozzle upgrades for the very reason you just stated - shorter injection times allowing for more complete combustion. We need to check with Simon if Viezu can provide a tune with shorter injection timings.

Are the injectors in the 1.9 the same as the 2.0?
Well, this is all very interesting. Good to see you're still tinkering, Aydan.
Gah, I was only going to Oettinger flash the Caddy.. Now you're making me consider further upgrades. I should stay away from forums and finish my Mk1. Hahaha.
