vnt17 would be nice for sure, but i think the polo could use improvements in other areas first, for how i drive it (for fun on touge).

sweet! vnt17 will be awesome in the octavia - it'd make it an effortless cruiser for sure.

"touge" is a japanese word whose kanji character literally consists of the kanjis for "mountain" and "above/below" - meaning mountain pass.

i never used to use the word (lots of the American Domestic Market ((not JDM, because when i lived in japan for 4 years i understood JDM to be synonymous with drivability)) crowd use the word despite their cars being WAY too low actually drive on touge - the kind of cars that are so low that they take 10 minutes back-and-forthing just to get out of a gentle driveway).

however, i watched a few videos of ''drift king'' Tsuchiya, and he describes a good "street" car as not being power focussed, but rather having good balance, good grip, good agility, good suspension travel and most importantly being functionally drivable, enjoyable and safe to drive, on mountain roads (as opposed to hardcore trackday cars).

this is the direction i took with my polo, so i figured the term "touge" fits

About to get some new tyres on the skoda, and also just about to tick over 130,000km..... so:

And the new tyres are Conti Sport 3's... I'm also increasing the size from 225/45/17 up to 235/45/17, because frankly I think it will make the ride and handling better

Well I got the turbo from evaded. It is not usable as-is (missing 3 turbine blades) but I expected that given the price

Some observations:

The turbo is SMALL. I mean, I expected it to be pretty small, but its a lot smaller than I thought... compared to turbo's I have sitting on the shelf at home, its small.

The impeller has a pretty good sized inducer - this is what seems to be the main difference between the -17 and the -15 - the compressor wheel. However, the compressor housing still has a small a/r and the outlet is also tiny. I would guess that theres hardly any, if any difference between the two turbo's exhaust sides.

Having discovered all this, I am thinking of basically buying a new centre cartridge for it (compressor, turbine and shaft and bearing case) and doing a lot of porting work to the compressor housing. I may also do some porting on the exhaust side, to make a kind if 'hot' gt1749vb.

however, I would make this recommendation to anyone wanting to go the turbo upgrade rout for their 1.9 TDI that is fitted with a 15 sized turbo - go BIGGER. got to a 1752 or 2052 at least.

Nonetheless - clearly it is an upgrade from the -15, so I am probably going to fix it up and run it on the skoda at some stage. Although the skoda is running just fine now, I might get bored and fit the gt17 anyway.. we'll see

In light of this I got to work yesterday on the 1749... after much heat from the blowtorch, CRC and hammering (I started with my trusty softblow but ended up using my also trusty ball pein...

Very happy with how the port job turned out - well worth the hour or so it took I reckon. The outlet as is (sorry I didnt take a before photo) is about 24mm.... what a JOKE! Anyway, I've opened it up about as much as I dare, since theres not all that much meat to take off actually.... as you see it in the picture 2 above, its 35mm on the long axis and 33 on the short - a huge inscrease over stock. I have reshaped the housing for about 30mm down the port to make the best use of the up sized outlet. An interesting observation though, I think, is that the port behind the outlet as standard is actually quite a lot larger than the outlet hole.... basically meaning its lazy machining/cost cutting I would say thats the reason for such a small outlet in the first place.

Anyway, should have this little beasty ready to go into the Skoda as soon as my cartrige arrives from the UK.
