i am looking at golfs in the 2005 - 2007 realm and notice that there is an overlap of 1.9L and 2.0L.
Can anyone advise which is better as newer is not always best.

I would suggest you test drive both engines and depending on your preference both transmissions as well (DSG and manual). I only test drove both 2.0 TDI engines, the 103kw Golf Pacific and the 125kw GT Sport TDI. I decided on the GT TDI as it was exactly what I was after and I haven't looked back ( except from the traffic lights )![]()

These two engines are a generation apart. The 2.0 is a LOT better all round, and if you have the option of the later 2.0 definately go that way, the differences are many, from better intercoolers and turbo's to much stronger internals and designs for better performance and drivability. That said the 1.9 does have the major advantage of the USA where it's been their main engine available and TDIclub for instance has a plethora of info available on this engine.

Thanks for the help. I am only looking at manuals, not interested in DSG as I like swapping cogs.
Given that the 2.0 is relatively new on the scene is there ant "issues" I should be aware of?

The before 2005 2.0L BKD engines had some problems overseas. I saw the posts in Dieselpower forum :: Zobrazit fórum - Údr (not in English), but I don't recall seeing any posts in here.
I wouldn't base my choice on that and still go for the 2.0L, which is now as reliable as 1.9L

I test drove the 1.9 and 2.0 in 2007 when we were looking for a new golf mk5 diesel, and went with the 2.0
We need the torque for carrying stuff (and roof pod) for weekends away down the coast. Now that I have 2 gnomes, we need to carry heaps more 'stuff', including the roof pod, and traded the mk5 for an octavia wagon - with the 2.0 diesel (same engine & gearbox combo as the golf). I then got the Oettinger reflashA little extravegant, but overtaking when fully loaded is even easier, quick and safe.
The 2.0 is a very strong and efficient engine for what we need.
Question is, what do you need?

if it helps, the 1.9 is a "heritage" variety that dates back to the early 90's. Its a bulletproof engine actually, not many australian's have experience with it because oz generally missed out on diesel golfs through the 90's (apart from the odd few). the 2.0L is, as has been said, a completely different engine and far more modern, but if you want a commuter car or something like that, go for the 1.9 - its far simpler and if you are planning on keeping it for a long time (i mean a LOOOONG time) its a proven thing. For power and refinement, go the 2.0.

We finally found a 2005 2.0 with 135,000Kms. Dark metallic grey and has had the major service done, which is timing belt I understand.
It took awhile to find the right car but has been worth the effort. This car was originally from qld and has been babied all its life. looking forward to picking it up today!

Congratulations and welcome to the oilers club.
Just a tip: check with VW dealer that the timing belt was replaced and when. Just to be on a safe side.Also check the inside of inlet manifold if it's not clogged up to much.
