    1.6TD Mk1

    Hi everyone,

about a month ago I drove my latest Mk1 Golf back from Adelaide. Its a 1.6td which starts and runs well and achieved a consumption of 4L/100kms. It is a 1.6 mech TD motor with a k24 turbo. I suspect that this is too big for the motor as there is heaps of lag and as soon as the turbo is doing its thing the motor runs out of fueling. I have installed a boost gauge and it just nudges 10psi.

Last night i drove it to my mums place for storage and although it is puncher than the 1.5D, above 80km/hr there is not much difference. It basically wont go over 120km/hr. Our other car, a 1.5D, runs out at 130km/hr and thats with shorter ratios.

My plans for the car are to finish sorting out the suspension, which was completely shagged, fit the 2.5" exhaust that I have, fabricate a custom downpipe, intercooler, EGT gauge and a smaller k14 turbo.

Any advice (especially from GLDGTI) is going to be appreciated!

I am honoured by mention in your post.

The governor on the 1.6TD pumps are particularly upsetting - that would be your main issue at the moment mate. The k14 is probably a good idea especially as its a bolt on option. I can change between k14 and t3 in about 3hours with my mk3 now, since the exhaust housings are nearly the same proportions.

Its really just the usual things - if the collar is still on the smoke screw, you can bet its a bit underfuelled. I have recently found that a turbotech boost controller is a very good thing to have - look on ebay. For the $30, its nice and easy boost control - Turbotech manual turbo boost controller- THE ORIGINAL! (eBay item 220630394267 end time 28-Nov-10 09:13:05 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

For your downpipe, you'll need about 3 90degree mandrel bends to cut up, or try and buy a "doughnut" - some exhaust shops might be able to get you one. Its exactly what it sounds like, you just cut it up as you need to have some tight radius bends.

For your EGT, its best to get a guage kit with a skinny probe. The best one I've found is this one:
Race Tech 52mm Smoke Stepper WHITE EGT Gas Temp Gauge (eBay item 170560540620 end time 11-Nov-10 20:48:23 AEDST) : Cars, Bikes, Boats

I reckon the best setup for intercooler is like what mollins and I did on his TDI mk1....

I have spare flanges for the T3/k14/k24 exhaust if you want one its free+postage

That is some high quality inside info Ayden! This is going to be a long and hopefully rewarding affair. I have a spare freshly rebuild 1.6TD motor that will find its way into Pebbles eventually. My girlfriend and I have just bought a property and will both be commuting some distance so sub 5L/100kms is a plus. We also will have a MASSIVE shed. I cannot emphasise how MASSIVE this shed is, its MASSIVE. Sliding doors, kitchen, wood fire, its insulated and has work benches. Anyway, thats an aside. I have somewhere to store and work on my cars - Planet Mancave.

So, again thanks for your advice, I will check out Mollins' post on his mTDI setup. I have a Saab intercooler that will fit beside the radiator but prefer what Tim (oneofthegreats) has done by putting the intercooler in front of the radiator. I have installed a petrol washer bottle (on the other side of the engine bay) to make room for the intake and intercooler, demolestered the wiring loom and replaced the carpet and seats. I have a Swoosh EGT gauge that i am yet to install, I dont know what the quality is like though.

Big shed sounds great, also sounds like yourslelf and your missus are on the same mission as my missus and I - looking for property with room for stuff, like sheds and VW's (and flying model aeroplanes, in my case).

I can't believe your car.... btw, is it a hydaulic or mechanical head?

I'm happy with the Swoosh EGT, it has the small probe that Aydan above bangs on about, heck I even just bought another one to put back in! It may not be accurate to the degree, but the rise is equal to that on vag com, and what's reall important to me is that I can monitor when something happens outside normal range. Then again the factory probe I measure with vag com is manifold pre turbo, and my EGT is post turbo, so it's always 100-150 degrees cooler.

Greg, have you tried running an aftermarket egt guage from the factory EGT probe (like tapping into the wires, theres usually only 2). If its a K type probe, it should work fine.
