Hi,
I've got a Haynes diesel Golf manual and it says stage 1 is 7.5 kgfm, and then stage 2 is another 1/4 turn to each bolt. It also says DON'T retorque after 1600km. This is for the 1.5 litre motor.
just about to put the head back on my diesel, can anyone tell me the torque specs? I've got a bentley manual but it only cover petrol models.
thanks
steve
Hi,

The Bentley says 90Nm and 66ft.lbs. Procedure:
"Torque head bolts to 50Nm (37ft.lb). Go over the sequence a second time, torquing the bolts to 70Nm (52ft.lbs), and then a third time torquing the bolts to 90Nm (66ft.lbs)"
Straight from 'The Bible'. The 1.5 doesn't have "stretch" bolts so the procedure is simple. The Bentley makes no mention of re-torquing after a given milage or period.
thank guys,
can't wait to get it on the road, I drive 50k's to work, my Syncro is a little heavy on the juice and I don't like racking up too many k's on it and my other car is a '79 bmw 323i 5speed and it is only a matter of time before I get busted speeding in it.
Interesting that two different manuals give different proceedures! Converting kgfm to Nm means multiplying by 9.81, so in Nm the Haynes stage 1 is 74Nm, then an additional 1/4 turn, so the end result is about the same as the Bentley manual.
I had the head off in my 1980 1.5 GLD back in 1991, and these are the numbers I used. The head gasket hasn't leaked in 14 years, so I guess this torque has been OK!
I've also had a 1985 GTD turbo diesel with the stretch bolts, with these the tensioning is much less forgiving that the non-stretch type. When I replaced the head on this car a couple of the old bolts snapped while removing them. They snapped just below the surface of the head - what a pain!
By the way, what have you had to do to your car?
The Audi 100 diesel that I had (RIP....What a shame!) needed stretch bolts. It was an '81 model privately imported from NZ. I got the new bolts from Canada, and the head gasket too. Had to buy a 12pt in-head socket to do the job. Just as an aside, it really pi**es me off that we don't get fine cars like that in Oz.
