09 vRS 2.0 CR TDI 125kw blowing smoke

    Hi All,

did a search regarding smoke, but could only find a couple posts referring to PD engines, not CR.
also had a search around Briskoda and couldn't find anything consistent with the behaviour I am observing.

09 Skoda Octavia vRS 2.0 TDI 125kw 6DSG (same as Golf GTD or Passat I beleive)

bog standard Australian delivered model - only has K&N panel insert filter

    157,000kms on the clock.

11,000km since last oil change (appears a little diluted and high on the stick - service booked in next week)

has been displaying frequent behaviour of passive regens lately.

last time i plugged a vagcom in, DPF was still within tollerance, but i've been planning to force a regen to bring the level right down.

forced regen has never been done on this car, i am second owner since 8000km 10mths old.

    observations -

car had sat for 6 days without moving, had not noticed any problems before this.

started car up and car warmed up very quickly to 75 degrees within 2.5kms going down a hill. (early morning, probably 6degC and car had sat outisde overnight)

car obviously doing passive DPF regen on cold start as car was revving higher and holding lower gear.

light throttle 55kmh and car was holding 4th - slight squeeze of the throttle and it was puffing smoke.

replicated this behavior at least 8 times.

as soon as the car was up to normal 90deg temp - i was not able to replicate

I drove it that afternoon and again this morning, unable to replicate.

under full boost no smoke, does not appear to be turbo related

noticed a slight hesitation at 95kmh under full throttle when the car was warmed up - never noticed this before.

This afternoon after the car had been sitting at my office for the whole day, started up to go home.

2kms down the road, noticed the car was idling high at the traffic lights typical with passive DPF regen.

engine temp was already up to 80 degrees so soon, and it was only 15 degrees Celsius outside.

taking off from the lights i noticed a puff of smoke.

light throttle 50kms and give it a squeeze and noticed smoke again.

engine was then up to 90 degrees and never saw it again on the 7km drive home.

Of the two observations of smoke so far - I can only connect passive regen while on cold start cycle.

engine temp rising rapidly from cold.

anyone with a CR TDI will know they take a long time to warm up to temp under normal conditions.

Has anyone else seen this behaviour before?

Any things my mechanic should look out for?

We normally give the EGR a proper clean every second service and wipe out every other.

We're now dropping service intervals to 10K instead of 15K

    thanks

I would also get rid off the KN filter and go back to factory filter.

    Hi Transporter,

whats your reasoning, and how do you see it being relative to observations above?
K&N has been in for over 80,000km so far.

I’m not saying that replacing the air filter with the genuine one will fix your engine. But it’s known that the oiled air filters aren’t best for the engines which have hot wire MAF sensors. Let alone poor filtration efficiency.

    Its not MAF related.
nothing to do with the K&N
