Just Take $1000 off every week until it sells.
I would think it will be hard to shift. People who know what an R36 is will also know that the warranty will expire soon, the extended warranty costs $ and also the 60k service will be big $ with DSG and it might need tyres (more $). It is priced more than Redbook prices and people don't want to pay for options because dealers always say options are worth very little at trade-in and I guess in a car like that people would want RNS.

I bought an R36 wagon 2 weeks ago for $51300 from a BMW dealer (MY09 white MFD, sunroof, 50,000k's - country car as full service history by VW Shepparton, 1 yr warranty remaining).
What I can say is that I never really considered buying privately, for the main reaon I think most people avoid private purchase at the higher price point. When a car is financed, private sales incur a higher interest rate.
Also, the car I purchased was simply the most reasonably priced at the time, whether dealer or private.
I'm currently doing the carsales thing with my old car (MY07 30R Spec B 6MTwagon) & agree with what others have said. The most important thing is patience, particularly if you're not in a huge rush to sell. Eventually a buyer will come along & your car will be exactly what they're after. What I wouldn't do is "Just Take $1000 off every week until it sells". You'll just end up selling it to the same person, for less money...
Good luck!

I was thinking of putting my car up for Private sale, but after reading this thread will take the hit and just trade it in - have not got the time or patience to sit there dealing with non serious tyre kickers or wankers who just want to take it for a thrash for a few thousand dollars (and by that I don't mean I've got 5 money trees in the back yard - but the weekends I would spend cleaning it etc to sell it I could just work and make up that money that I would loose trading it in)
Anyway - gotta get my car back from VW first....

If you can spare the time to make the effort it can be a significant difference selling privately.
I sold a car about 6 months ago for 53k, the best trade in value I was offered was 45k. I'm not saying every car will have an 8k difference, but for me 8k is a good reward for some effort. Yeah it took time and I had to drop the price, but 8k in my pocket is better than 8k in the dealers pocket.
Another issue selling privately is timing, the time to sell and the time between selling and getting a new ride. Alternative transport arrangements can be a hassle.

I've listed 5 cars on carsales in the last couple of years, and have a 3/5 success rate with sales via that website (with one trade-in and one I decided to keep).
On average the cars were listed for around 3-4 months before being sold, though I set an above-average price for each and waited for the right buyer to come along rather than pushing down the price and getting impatient. It wasn't necessarily a case of the expensive cars taking longest to sell - whilst the longest (around 13 months) was a ~$75K sports car, the hardest car to sell (and the one we ended up trading when we got sick of the carsales process) was a ~3 year old Falcon XR6 ute worth less than $20K.
It's really just a matter of timing - having the car listed for sale long enough to find the specific buyer interested in your particular vehicle. Through patience we even managed to sell our resprayed bright yellow V6 Touareg for about the same price as 'regularly coloured' cars were selling for.
For the 3 cars that sold via carsales it was worth the wait, as we got back far more than we had been offered as a trade-in. If you are able to wait it out I'm sure you'll find the right buyer for your R36 at the price you're after.
I've had my '06 TFSI wagon on for 3 months now...
I had 1 offer, 3 enquiries. Nothing near what I want.
It's got 103000km, lots of options, lots of extras, asking $27500 which is around the same as a similarly aged GTI
I guess there's just not many people out there looking for a passat
at the same time, my brother sold his Jetta within a week for full asking price.
I think your R36 is priced very well but people don't even know about these cars, they aren't looking for them so they don't see the ad on carsales
I am getting a lot of "views" each day, both large and small add.
Since dropping the price I enquiries have picked up and I think I have now sold the car - subject to an inspection being done tomorrow which I am certain the car will pass.
I think it is a matter of waiting for a buyer who wants an R36 - there are only a few people interesting in running a car like this (I reckon it is brilliant, and the fuel is not a big issue).
In any case hopefully it will all come to an end soon and I can take delivery of the new beast.
Confirmed Global Warming Sceptic. No Longer a VW Owner -Loving my new 2011 Range Rover Sport - bought as VW unable to provide info on the new Toureg despite it being released overseas 12 mths ago. 2008 R36 Wagon, 2006 GTI and 2004 R32 - Gone. Sorry VW, you make great cars but until you improve your customers' experiences you will lose customers
congrats!
for mine I had a few more elderly guys come, and they aren't interested in the options at all, especially the sport suspension.
I did have a younger guy who liked my options but at that point I decided not to go any lower - just can't find anything similar to replace it with for the money.
