The Volkswagen plant in Emden
Plant
Emden, 31 December 2008 - Volkswagen's Emden plant occupies a total area of 4,100,000 square metres, with buildings covering about 1,600,000 square metres.
The local public utilities company, the Emder Stadtwerke, operate wind turbines on the site, including one of the largest systems in the world, which has a capacity of 4.5 Megawatts. The plant site also features large parking areas for vehicles to be exported and a test facility.
Production
The Emden plant produces the Passat Saloon and is the only plant to produce the Passat Variant and the Passat CC. 2005 was the year of the new Passat (6th generation) ramp up. In 2008 about 236.000 vehicles left the assembly lines in Emden. The plant has a technical capacity of 1,250 units per day. Since 2001, Europe's most advanced press shop was commissioned. The halls of the new press shop, with a total area of 28,000 square metres, house two new vacuum transfer presses, each designed for a total force of 73,000 kilonewtons. The shop has a capacity of about 20,000 parts per day.
Workforce
The Emden plant is the largest industrial employer in the East Frisia region. At the end of December 2008 the plant has about 8,900 employees.
Port
A special feature of the Emden plant is the port of Emden, which is located in the immediate vicinity. Each year about one million vehicles are shipped to and from Emden. Ships leave the port for e.g. North America and Japan several times each week and consignments are shipped to Great Britain almost every day. The vehicles that are going to be exported are mainly transported to Emden via train. Up to 200 rail cars reach Emden every day. A platform system is used to unload the vehicles which are then loaded onto ships in the port. Volkswagen Group products imported to Germany also pass through the port of Emden. These include the New Beetle from Mexico and the Sharan from Portugal.
History
The Emden plant, established in 1964, initially concentrated on Beetle production, especially for the North American market. By the time the Beetle was discontinued in 1978, production had reached 2,360,591 units. Visitors can still see the last Beetle produced in Germany in the reception area at the plant.
The Volkswagen Passat has been produced at Emden since 1977. Since then, the Emden plant has been the lead plant for production of this successful model. Several generations of the Passat have already been assembled there. Production of the third generation started in 1987, followed by the fourth-generation Passat in 1993. The six millionth vehicle produced at Emden also left the plant in 1993. Production of the fifth generation Passat started in 1997. The 12 millionth Passat built by Volkswagen plants worldwide was produced in Emden mid-2003 and the 13 millionth vehicle in the Passat family left the assembly line in Emden in September 2004.
The market launch of the 6th generation Passat Variant took place in August 2005. The 15 millionth Passat produced worldwide was built in Emden in November 2007. By the end of 2008, the plant had built in excess of 9.5 million vehicles. 2008 sees production start-up of Volkswagen’s new Passat CC model which will also be built exclusively at Emden. Market launch of this new sporty member of the Volkswagen family was in June 2008.
