    When is a MY10 a MY10 ?

    I ordered a new R36 in early July that was to be "factory" built - a wonderful way for dealers to justify a lack of stock on a limited option list

    Now in September it appears there are "officially" a significant number of differently available options over the MY09 model. !!!!

    Has anyone got a September quote with options that they are prepared to post ?

    I have a few queries:
    1. Is the 'MY?? ' a global identifier or just Australia ?
    2. When does the official model year change globally ? I find it hard to believe that the world uses the end of the OZ financial year to be the change date for models
    3. Surely as buyers of a product with a X month lead time before delivery we can legally be expected to be advised as to vehicle changes if the purchase crosses over into a new model designation
    4. If changes to model options are introduced mid-model does this dilute the value of the earlier purchases of that model year ?

    AFAIK

    1. MY (Model Year) is used world wide.
    2. It varies from model to model, and depends on when the factory wants to changeover to the new model. IIRC it is usually between July and September.
    3. If you look at the fine print in VW brochures and sales contracts you will almost certainly see wording to the effect that "VW reserve the right to make changes to the spec at any time". Dealers have no control if VW decide to make running changes to specs, whether at MY change or not.
    4. Build date is the most important thing to most secondhand car buyers (not MY, and not "Compliance date" either). Sometimes the MY can have an effect if the changes are particularly significant (eg the big increase in power and improved handling for the latest model Subaru WRX will probably reduce the value of the previous model).

    i ordered my V6 Higline in April 09....Build date July 1st 09 AND delivered Sep 2009 with the 2010 cosmetic upgrades. When i followed up with VW Australia, they advised that July 1st is the change over. I would suspect though that if there are new options that were not available when you ordered, that it would be difficult to add them on. You never know, ask the question.

    2nd hand dealers can be sneaky with dates as well. I've been told before by dealers that "the car is an '04 but it was registered in '05". They'll tell you a variety of stories as to why the car was manufactured 6-9 months before it was registered, sometimes those stories may be legit, but sometimes the real story is the car is an ex-demo and has been run on trade plates for 6 months.

    Does it really matter for a second hand car? For the purposes of insurance and registration the date used is the date of manufacture not the year of registration or compliance and not the model year.

    There are plenty of reasons why cars would be registered 6-9 months after manufacture.

    - manufactured overseas - takes months to get to Australia
    - end of model - manufacturer will produce extra stock whilst production changes over to new car like the mark V
    - downturn on sales leaves cars sitting around
    - dealer gets a special deal on a lot of cars and has them sitting around in his lot
    - specialist low volume imports - many cars brought in and some sit around for 12 or more months - as in the case of some skoda models
    - cars sitting in bond

    and so on and so forth.

    Cars that are used as demos have to be registered (except for the provisions of limited use dealer plates) before they are used on the road. It would make no sense for a dealer to use a brand new car as a demo without registering it as it's illegal to use dealer plates in that way, they won't get the rebates they get for having demo cars, they will have additional demo cars available (they have to maintain a certain number) and there are insurance issues.

    The only sure way to tell is if the turbocharger is there.

    I thought they changed from a turbo to a supercharger for the MY10's ?

    Well, you have to admit the supercharged V6 engine from the new Audi S5 would be a nice upgrade

    Hey kgbAgent - Congrats on your new car! Was it registered (at the motor registry) as a 2009 Passat R36 or 2010?
