What problems have you had out of warranty?

Approx. six months out and no issues apart from occasional top up of oil at the half way mark b/w service 2.0 TDI PD wagon, 43,000km. Still glad I got the extended warranty though

Front passenger side door handle does not open the door intermittently (in fact, it did it once or twice last year during winter and this year it did it for a week or so again during cold weather). Car has extended warranty but it is not playing up at the moment but I will take it in next time it occurs.

My 2007 model 103kw tdi has just had an fuel injector failure... not happy! Its only 4months out of warranty (and has done only 47,000km) - so waiting to see if VWA will cover some of the costs.

They sometimes cover these sort of failures for up to year outside of warranty - in the old days they called this their "good will" warranty. I had a throttle body replaced on a B5 1998 model Passat back in 2002 (~7mths out of warranty), also had a water pump replaced on a 2003 GTI a month out of factory warranty.

My Passat is a year out of warranty (done 70000 km) and my air con is not working. Seems to be a compressor fault. I will go to a dealer and see what he says. May be I am lucky and they will be willing to offer a "good will" warranty on this compressor.

My 2006 3.2L Passat was mostly fine for the warranty period. Then at 50,000 I was up for new front brake rotors, as the discs cannot be machined. $600 a pair (plus fitting) and I could have bought them from the USA for US$200 (plus $300 shipping!). The dealer wasn't able to explain to me why they were so over priced. I have also been through front brake pads once and rear pads twice (in 70,000k) plus new tyres a just 50,000. Now at 70,000k I am up for new suspension bushings all round; a common problem in German cars that are not made for the utterly crap roads we get dished up in Australia. Oh and the rear child lock stopped working about 6 months ago. I know most of these are reasonable issues, but I'm having a whinge because I can - isn't that what internet forums are for?

Plus I hate the way dealer service centres charge a premium rate to let apprentices work on your car, and they can charge whatever they want to for parts. Screw your coffee machine, reception lounge and SMS booking reminders! Just give me cheaper service you bastards!

    I feel better now

as a comparison the wife's baby Merc (A160) cheapest of the range has three problems fixed under warranty (and new ecu 2 months out for free) including faulty passenger airbag warning sensor and transmission torque converter. Since then five years ago (now eight years old) it has had no faults at all gets serviced once a year at an independent, anyone who drives it comments how tight and rattle free it feels with 85,000km hope the VW can last as well. And timing chain as well so no belt requires changing. Keep getting letters / test drive offers, functions at wineries have been to a track test day at Sandown nothing from VW (apart from a keyring)

Update on my MY07 103kW tdi Passat...

Good news is VWA have authorised replacement of all 4 injectors at no cost to me. Pretty good news considering I am 4 months out of warranty.

Just have to wait for the parts now (hoping to have these next week).
