Thread: What Passat's do you own...

  1. #11

I had a B2 1982 Passat GL, privately imported from Berlin as a special order (German spec, but RHD) as the guy knew he was emigrating and wanted to bring in a new duty-free car with him. It had a single foglight in the left tail light cluster (for LHD cars) but was RHD. I even had a copy of a letter he sent VW Germany complaining that he'd failed the ACT rego check cos the headlights low beam cut-off was set for right-hand (LHD) traffic!

It was a strange looking thing, a kind-of fastback but I always seem to go for the orphans so I liked it. I found a new Kamei front spoiler at a VW show and fitted a set of ATS rims. It looked pretty good at the end. Also got a 1.8-litre engine out of a wrecked B2 imported from Sth Africa. My car was totalled by a later owner. It's history now.

I later owned a 1991 B3 Passat GL 16v that was a TKM company car. TKM brought in 15 or so cars and then decided not to bring in any more. It cost me $24,000 in January 1993, with about 11,000km on it. It was the closest thing to a new VW I could buy at that point - all the GTIs were sold and I didn't want a Cabrio.

It was an interesting car cos it was rare (but I got sick of the 'hoverers' on freeways who would roost in my blind spot for ages gawping at the Passat) but not really anything special now I look back. The engine lacked torque and the crap fuel we had back then meant that the ECU was stepping back timing, cos it went nothing like the claims I read for UK or US cars.

How things have changed for VW... in the early '90s you'd really notice any remotely new VWs, now they're everywhere!

I think this thread is long dead, but since I've just joined the forum this week I had to mention my 76 Passat LS sedan. It's been in the family since near new, went from Brisbane to country Victoria with my sister for a few years till she went o/seas, then none of us in the family could bear to see it go, so I drove it back up to Bris and have been gradually restoring it. Nothing's really wrong with it, just needs interior trim work and maybe a paint job if I'm keen, although some cut 'n' polish would probably sort the existing paint out. It's got a perfectly reliable engine (after I put an elect ignition on it), has A/C (an under dash unit Mum put in there in desperation during one particularly hot summer back in the mid '80s) and a new set of shocks which restored the handling to its former glory. As soon as I get some time I'll post some pics of it.

Fantastic. Have a look at my VBPicGallery. I should take some pics of my interior. I am also getting ready to give it a good cut and polish with a buffer. The new SEAT engine that Golf Loon put in, and then I did some tuning work goes like a train. My next project is a 32/36 Holley carb and a sports exhaust, a real wolf in sheep's clothing.

    Hey guys

Was at Pick and Payless today just snooping around at some dubs.

Saw 2 Passats: a white 1974 sedan, and a light blue 1976 sedan which i used to own (for like an hour until it was written off by a 4WD, i posted a thead titled ''Unfortunate Story" on it.)

Anyone in Sydney looking for Passat Parts, this is the place to go.

Currently I have a B5 (99) 1.8T 20V. Only mod worthy of mention so far is a Chip, the rest standard. Bought it for less than it was worth at the time (thanks to a not so sharp salesman) and its still running well
