Without dragging this thread too far OT, the MX5 would be one of the best cars to learn a bit of DIY with. Very basic to work on, with surprisingly lots of room to play around under the bonnet. Parts are cheap and plentiful and either the aussie mx5cartalk forum or miata.net has all the info you'd ever need.
The track days with the MX5 club were great as well.

Previous Car - Lexus IS250 Sport Luxury MY07

Current Car - VW Jetta (Loan car till my R36 arrives in Jul/Aug10)

Future Car - Refer my signature

Reason for change - Partners 12 yr old twins are both just a touch under 6' tall and Lexus was too cramped in the back. Previous ride to the Lexus was MY05 Territory Ghia AWD.Didn't want to go back to a SUV as was virtually driving along throwing $50 notes out the window with the petrol costs. Lexus didn't have anything else that I liked the styling of and I'd had a drive of an R36 sedan about 18 months ago and went and test drove the R36 Wagon late last year and instantly found my next car!

Waiting for my new R36 Sedan to arrive
Current car to replace 07 A3 Audi

Reason: 3 year lease up and the R36 is such good value compared to an Audi A4
Keeping my R33 GTR and DR30 Skylines though

    Prev car: MY05 Subaru WRX

    Current: MY09 Passat R36 Wagon

Why: WRX was too small for carting around the kid and his stuff, was also too small to use for work. Wanted a European car again and a wagon preferably and after a string of 4 cylinder cars wanted a 6+ cylinder again.

Previous car - 2007 Liberty GTB Wagon

Current - 2010 Passat CC TDI

Why- Subaru botched the new Liberty. Actually is a better car than the previous, more refined, comfortable, interior is a little better- Unfortunately its pig-ugly. Looked at several other cars however nothing matched the CC for features, quality and price. Has a great size boot and TDI ecconomy is fantastic.

Previous Car - 1994 Toyota Celica Group A Rallye

    Current Car - MY10 R36 limousine

Reason for change - Didn't want to change - loved that car!! It was stock and was running 16lb boost and weighed only 1350kg. Oh and a gorgeous red! Twins are now too big and it was time for me to grow up!

Previous car to a VW was a Subaru 3.0lt B Spec manual Wagon, great car except for the lack of low end torque. Test drove the Passat 3.2lt V6 4 Motion wagon and was hooked by the low end torque - for driveability - and the DSG gearbox - all the advantages of an auto box with none of the disadvantages. I then traded to the R36 and have not even considered a change. Best car I've ever had.

Other little things that by themselves are not much but add up to making the VW Passat a much better car to own:
    1) gas strut on the bonnet whereas the Subaru still had a metal bar.
    2) Better tie down hooks in the wagon area
    3) Umbrella holder in the door
    4) Customizable options like blinkers etc.
    5) Retractable screen between the wagon area and cabin

What car did you own immediately before your VW Passat?

Previous car - Subaru WRX Wagon

    Present car - R36 Sedan

Why the R36? Because I wanted:
    - Performance; because I'm used to something that will boogie when asked.
    - Handling. Loved the WRX handling including the AWD and didn't want to go too far backwards.
    - Something a little more grown up than the WRX. i.e. Something a little understated.
    - A well built car.
    - Some added luxuries.
    - No manual clutch. Bung left knee and an operation somewhere round the corner and I loved the DSG when I first drove it when compared to an auto.
    - Safety features
    - All the above and still affordable.
