Oddly enough I agree with almost everything you just said. I have however over the years been fortunate enough (although my bank balance would disagree) to experiment with a wide range of tyres, and hence my opinions here.

So let's agree to disagree, and move on.

I do tend to agree with Cro that the standard Dunlops on the R36 are not great from a performance perspective. Yes, I am not as experience a driver as Rocket36 or Cro but I have owned many cars and somehow I managed to understeer my R36 going into corners more so than my other cars that are not supposed to be as performance orientated. And these are around the same corners and similar speeds, therefore I reckon its the tires.

I think the tyres are fitted because there is a full size spare in the boot, which is not the case with the GTI, R32, R50 (not sure on the passat cc).

As such the tyres need to be assymetrical which the conti sports, dunlop sportmax are not. If those tyres were used you would need 2 spare tyres.

Don't flame me if I am incorrect- but thought this might be the case.

I agree that the Dunlops Sp01s are rubbish (as per my original post), and will be changing them as soon as possible.

One thing I have noticed, OEM tyres are always more expensive, and a dealer once told me "most" people change their tyres like for like, and as the tyre manufacturer sells the tyres to the manufacturers so cheap, they recoup costs from most people who dont switch brands.
Confirmed Global Warming Sceptic. No Longer a VW Owner -Loving my new 2011 Range Rover Sport - bought as VW unable to provide info on the new Toureg despite it being released overseas 12 mths ago. 2008 R36 Wagon, 2006 GTI and 2004 R32 - Gone. Sorry VW, you make great cars but until you improve your customers' experiences you will lose customers

I drove an R36 last week and if you guys think the tyres aren't good enough for road use then you are fruit cakes laced with coccaine.

seriously, I managed to get one particular white wagon uncomfortable once on a road I know backwards. It pushed wide and TC kicked in. Exactly what I want it to do. The tyres said that's quite enough and the car responded appropriately.

Just buy track tyres for the track.

R36 is not a serious performance car. It's a family truckster that handles quite well and hides its weight well.

    Hi Gead

hi r-bert....that's quite a cat to cast amongst these here pigeons...

i certainly didn't feel that the tyres were the weak link in the package, more like the driver

in all seriousness, i was pushing the car as hard as i was prepared to on a public road, and did not suffer any catastrophic handling calamities....sometimes i wonder what sort of driving needs to be undertaken to find the limits of tyres and suspension, and how this is can be practiced safely on public roads....meh...
