Weird Noise from rear left of car..

Starts to come in from about 60-100kmh then it seems to get quieter. Sounds like a whirring or woo woo woo noise, hard to describe. Though it might have been wind noise from one of the windows or sunroof not sealing but have opened and closed all of them slightly and can still hear it. Almost sounds either like a wheel bearing or noise from the tyre. Might take it to the stealer when I get a chance and get them to check it out.

    Wheel alignment?

    Hi OilBurna,

Suggest that you take the car to your local dealer and ask them to check the alignment. I had the sort of noise you are indicating emanating from my front left (slowly got louder over time), and it turned out to be my front alignment. I trashed a set of front tyres because I was too slow in getting it checked. Scalloped too badly (not unsafe, but SOOOO annoyingly loud). So a set of new Bridgestone Potenza Adrenalines went on the front @ about 22000km. But gee they are good... So quiet in comparison to the Pirellis.

As an aside, I recently had the "new" Bridgestones rotated front to rear and the original Pirelli P-Zeros moved from the back to the front. With the tyres rotated, the steering wheel sat slightly off neutral. When I took it back to my dealer the next morning, they looked straight at the alignment and found it was out - both front and back. They fixed it then and there (no charge), but indicated that they thought a quick check of the alignment every 6 months is worth it, especially with the heavy front end of the Passat. Not really sure why moving tyres front to back ONLY would suddenly show up an alignment issue, but there you go. Because it was out, AND I KNOW I had not hit any pot-holes etc after I had the front tyres replaced and an alignment done at my local Bridgestone Tyre Centre, I'll be following VW's suggestion to stay on top of it regularly.

One more point - they told me that to keep their VW workshop certification, they need to have their alignment equipment calibrated every month (or two months - cannot remember which). Tyre shops may not have the same regime of calibration, so make your choice where you want your alignments to be undertaken...

    Hope that all helps.

    Cheers

    G'Day!

John Hughes VW in Perth. One heck of a long way for you to drive!!

But I assume that all dealers would have the same VWAG stipulations around Australia.

    Good luck!
