    Thumbs up VW extended warranty

    Hi All,
Just recently joined the VW club by purchasing a 125TDI Passat sedan (Icelandic grey, sat-nav, MDI). Car should be arriving in 2-3 weeks. I've been reading this forum for information for the last 2-3 months whilst making my decision on this purchase. As such, i have also learned of a few reliability niggles with some Passats in the past (hopefully VW has rectified thesea and once again reclaimed its position as a manufacturer of bullet-proof quality). Thus, this led me to ponder whether is it worthwhile taking out the expensive 36months/60,000km extended warranty. Any information and past experiences would be most appreciated. Thank you in advance. Cheers.

If you are keeping your car past the 3 year mark it is well worth buying the official VW new car extended warranty (not the used car warranty, and definitely NOT any limited dealer only warranty). Note that you must buy it before the original warranty expires.

There are a few threads around VWW telling you where the best places are to buy it (and save over $1,000 off the RRP), so seek (search) and ye shall find.......

Has anyone encountered any significant issues with the car after the turned 3? My Passat is turning 3 in April and I am contemplating.

I had a few things that were fixed under warranty such as noisy sunroof cover and the clips fell off around the inner wheel arch. All nothing major.

Not sure if I will spend $1k next in the next 12 months fixing things up?

Aircon is a common failure and will cost way more than the warranty will cost you. Depending on engine and gearbox; a turbo or mechatronic are also very expensive if you have to pay for either.

But of course it is up to each individual what their risk tolerance is. Even if I don't claim for anything I wanted the peace of mind (and I'll be happy not to use the warranty 'coz that means I'm out driving rather than waiting for my vehicle to be fixed).

refer to the vw extended warranty thread in the mkv golf section. Call Eric or John at Ferntree Gully in Vic. I am definitely taking it up while no problems so far don't want to take any chances.

    Extended Warranty clause

The Volkswagen New Vehicle Extended Warranty PDS issued by Allianz states on page 9:

    Making a claim
    What you must do
We may not pay your claim if you do not act as follows:
    1. Contact us as soon as possible

    2. Assist us with your claim

    3. Problem with your vehicle
If you have a problem with your vehicle you must:
    a. take all reasonable precautions to prevent any further loss or damage;
    b. take your vehicle to the dealer who sold it to you or, if this is not possible, the closest licensed repairer of your choice; (my emphasis)
    (end of quotation from PDS)

3.b. is unclear. What does "if this is not possible" mean? Anything is possible!

When I purchased my Passat in 2007 there was only one VW dealer in Canberra - and I don't want to deal with them ever again! Since then a VW dealership has opened in Belconnen (the Brand Manager posts on this forum) which is close to my home. If I take out an Extended Warranty, take my vehicle to my closest VW dealer and made a claim, would I have to prove that it was not possible to take my vehicle to the selling dealer?

It doesn't matter what we on this forum think - contact Allianz and ask them for their definition (and get it in writing if it is a worry for you).
