Is the V6 Passat / R36 really as quick as the specs say?

    Hi all

Just wondering from owners whether the B7 V6 really accelerates to 100kmh in anywhere near 5.6 seconds?

The figures which I've seen quoted in reviews and the brochure is really very quick, but is it relatively easy to achieve in real life?

And, related to this, does the B7 V6 have a launch control, or is that only on the older R36?

It's significantly quicker than BMW 540s, etc!

    thanks

    S

Yes. I have one, surprisingly fast, I have't timed mine, but will as soon as I get the chance. Check youtube for some vids of timed accel. Also they do have launch control. I have tried this, good fun.

It's entirely possible. A 2.0T with a stage 1 chip can already achieve 5.6 seconds in a 0-100 run so I'd say the R36 is fully capable of delivering what the specs claim.

Yeah.. it's pretty quick. I would imagine it'd be very close to that number.

But it doesn't FEEL quick though which is interesting.

And yeah mine does have Launch Control. Used it once, scared the crap out of me, haven't touched it again, hah.

Just be wary though that I'm fairly sure there's a counter in the car's computer that logs every time you thump it with Launch Control. Something the dealership I'm sure would be checking on warranty claims.

Quick vid of about 10->80km/h. Not great as I was trying to show the quick gear change, but you get the point.

It's quick to 100 because of it's 4motion launch. Once you're at 100 it doesn't have as much as an SS or XR8 due to only having a 3.6l v6 in a 1700kg car.. It's still good at passing etc, just won't push you back in your seat a hell of a lot.

satz, short answer is 'you had better believe it'....... The B7 does have launch control & when you drop the brake it springs out of the blocks like you wouldn't believe & all done with the approapriately awesome growl from the engine bay. Even though the B6 R36 & the B7 V6 are geared a little differently they both reach the same goal in the same time.

I agree with MrWolf in that it doesn't feel as fast as it actually is. As far as keeping up with V8 Commodores & Falcons you would be very surprised just how good the 3.6 is.

Check out these short y/tube vids. They are quite instructional on just how good this engine is. VW Passat Variant R36 acceleration - YouTube

its exactly as has been said

the R36 is definitely as fast as claimed. in fact i can almost get 5.6 without launch control so i think it might be even slightly faster with launch although i have not tried it for fear of being addicted and then damaging it

the thing is that it doesn't feel as fast as it is actually going. i think it has something to do with the linear torque delivery and the general smoothness of the experience. there's no rush of torque when a turbo kicks in and the engine is not peaky with all power high in the rpm range. it drives like an E46 M3 (only not horribly jerky like the crappy SMG)

Well said guys... They go pretty hard... Once your use to the power feels a little slow. But def. a fun car to drive!

Hah, this is true. Buttt, I'm sure if you were driving an F1 car around daily, eventually it'd start to feel slow as well. You'll always want more power.
