driver-side seat bolster collapsing is the issue on R36
Hello All,
Yesterday I took a used 130TDI 3C MY13.5 sedan for a test drive and was very impressed. It's the first time I've driven a VW since my mum's 1100 Beatle 35 years ago. They've improved somewhat! I was amazed at how punchy a turbo diesel is. The overall driving experience was way ahead of the Subaru Liberty and the Mazda 3 & 6 I also test drove.
Anyway, the car is a VW Australia demonstrator with 8000km on the clock. The dealer is asking around $39K. From my search on Carsales.com this seems like a good price. However I know nothing about VWs so I'm here looking for any advice you can offer me about used Passats.
The dealer says the car warranty extends to 2016 (month to be confirmed). As it is post-2012 the DSG problems have been sorted. He's 99% sure the car is subject to the fixed-price servicing.
I read on this forum there is a problem with the driver-side seat bolster collapsing. I'll check that out. I reckon I'll push him to throw in headlight protectors, rubber floor mats and the iPod adaptor cable.
Anything else I should be looking for?

Mine haven't Collapsed (Yet) It does creak when getting out however Not a worry as far as I am concerned
Mats are $155 for 4. If it has Xenons you don't put headlight protectors on it. Ipod cable $80 from Stealer $15 on Fleebay
Weathershields $115
Got 5.589L per 100km on a 973K trip last week 54.13L at highway speed all the way
It didn't have the DSG problems as its a 6 spd Was the 7spd dry clutch boxes that were the problem

does it come with all options? 39k seems very steep given the high kilometre demo
i paid 43k in november my 13.5 highline with sunroof
Thanks for the replies.
I'm surprised the mats are so cheap. I heard everything VW is $$$?
What's the problem with xenons and headlight protectors?
$39K is steep? List price for the new car is $49,754. That's an $11K discount for a car with 8000k on the clock. Admittedly I haven't bought a car for over 10 years, but that sounded pretty good to me. What should I offer?
I doesn't have sunroof, but I don't want one. As far as I'm aware, it has no optional extras.
Appreciate any more advice. Thanks in advance.
Xenons have washers and you cant wash the glass if you have protectors on them
I suggest you negotiate without extras as some charge $50 a time to put them in the car.
Buy them off parts afterward. I did that with the Polo mats and saved $50 on what the salesman told me was the price.
Just a heads up to beware.
I paid $60K for mine in 2011 but has $15,000 of extras

Thanks Hillbilly, I'll keep that in mind.
Does anyone recommend mud-flaps, or do they spoil the look of the car?
Look good and save the paint on rear guards Cost about $90 each end I cant find the invoice but the Polo rears were $87
Make sure they give you the right ones as the wagon ones are different to the Mk6 despite what VW will tell you. Don't know about the cars but suspect may be the same as the rear guards are a different curve to the prev model
They got me the wrong ones and had to drive an hour each way to change them.
They are easy to put on fronts as you just pull the wheel to opposite lock. Rears you have to remove wheels and drill one hole on inner edge of the flap. Instructions in the packets.
They are much tidier than Ebay models and better quality as well I always fit them to my cars Cheaper than repairing stone chips

Thanks again Hillbilly
my opinion only but yes i feel it's too much of a premium for a used car - complied last year and 8000 km is used as far my hard earned is concerned.
at the end of the day, if youre happy and feel it's a good buy i'd recommend biting the bullet and doing the deal. after all, if it ticks the boxes for you, that is all that matters.
best of luck and enjoy your new vw!
