I usually stop before tempting the red line or as soon as it appears.
Despite it being fairly obscure, in some states it is illegal to leave the tongue in when not towing if it is a removable one like an HR.
Similarly it is illegal to have wide towing mirrors on when not towing.
In NSW Regulations state that they should not obscure number plate and "Towbars must not protrude dangerously when there is no trailer connected". Not totally clear however it does not say that the tongue must be removed when not in use.
I had to take my car to my local VW dealer after delivery as the static turning lights, and lane assist would not work as the car had not been properly configured for the towbar. The position of the red line did not move, appears to be approx 150mm form rear measured from the centerline of the rear bumper.
