I'm in a similar predicament actually.

I want to add a tow bar to my R36 wagon to tow a 6x4 trailer on occasion, but have no idea what the most cost effect option is?
I believe Best Bars in NZ make the ADM tow bars, but you can also buy genuine VW towbars in UK which have a higher tow ball rating.

Anyone here retro-fitted a tow bar after purchase?

It should, theoretically, be cheaper to do it later on. You'll be able to get a better price through the service department, as you're effectively dealing direct. Otherwise what happens is the service department charges the sales department, who puts their mark-up on it, then charges you.

If it's a lousy job, and it happens from time to time, take the car back and have it sorted.

I've fitted a few on cars that have been with the owner for some time. Only difference to me is the overall cleanliness of the vehicle. I prefer to work on them before the owner takes them down every dirt road in the district

    I believe so.

I didn't bother getting part no's from my contact at Camberwell VW parts, after hearing this price even at trade price, I kind of lost interest in the project.

    Not ADR-approved.

Not worth the headache if it's related to an accident.
