They will run on, after you've shut the car off, if certain conditions are met.
Essentially, they stay on to prevent heatsoak.
This morning when I arrived at work (20km drive) I turned off my passat and noticed the thermo fans were still running, and running hard. Found this odd as I have never had them run after turning my car off before, even when it has been 40c outside and today was only half that. I returned to my car nearly 5 mins later to find them still going just as hard as when I left it. To stop them I restarted the car and switched it off which resolved it.
Has anyone else had a similar incident or suggestions on why it occurred. I have rang my VW dealer and booked it in to see if it logged any reason for this occurring. Passat is a 130tdi, 11mths old.
Cheers for any advice offered.

Thanks Umai, I have had other cars run after shutting off before, but considering the outside temp today and how easy it was driven,I found it really odd that they were running on max 5 minutes after shutting down the engine.
I have driven it a lot harder in hotter conditions than today and never heard them run like that before.
Possibly normal but seems like something electronic glitched during shut down today, as once I restarted engine and shut down again they instantly stopped.

I have had the same experience with my 125 TDi, which is almost 12 months old; it's now happened twice and only on 1 of those occasions the weather was hot - that same time was also after a run from Albury to Wagga.
There was also a strong smell at the time and so I suspect it may have been the DPF regenerating. Perhaps someone can shed light on this? I too asked the dealer and they didn't have a clue as to what could be causing it.

Cheers PHA, was doing some research and I think you are correct with it having to do with the DPF regen. I didn't notice a smell, but all symptoms point towards a regen as I shut the car off, triggering both fans to try and remove the excess heat a regen creates.
