    SUNA for RNS510?

Sorry if this has been discussed before... but is there anyway to enable SUNA as per this article for our RNS510?

No, the service sucks, SUNA suck as a company, you would have to buy a new car with RNS 510 even if VW did offer it (see point 2 that SUNA suck), the system is useless and can be an hour behind on updates and the system is made obsolete by google maps traffic which is actually realtime and accurate.

Actually if you look at the map disc. the toc information file contains a TMC line. TMC = suna & that field is left blank. Compared to the garmin devices that line seems to be the code needed to break the encryption that suna uses. Not sure if anyone else has other information. v16 of maps is due soon anyways maybe suna will be activated then with the new maps?

Suna (rubbish product) will not be enabled with the new maps.

Suna (environmental vandals) will only sell their service with new hardware, if you want to get it on your Volkswagen you will have to wait until Volkswagen offer it (and I really doubt they will as it's rubbish) and you will than have to purchase a new car.

They can't just enable it in the new maps.

There's a few manufacturers offering this service now but once people realise how absolutely useless it is I'm not sure that the other manufacturers will offer it.

If Suna were smart (and they're not) they would team up with google and use the google data to update the cars realtime rather than relying on traffic loops on the ground that don't offer a realistic view of traffic conditions.

But Suna's traffic model will see it fail unless they get the government to throw more money at them, selling the service only with new hardware and not offering subscriptions is crazy and will cost them a lot of revenue.

IMO the only useful traffic service is google maps with traffic info turned on.

you are right Mav, snua is not quite accurate. bought a garmin just to try it out & it has jams where there are no jams & no jams where there are. not the most reliable piece of kit.

I have a Navman S50 which I bought before the Suna service started. Navman brought out a new map version and I had to buy a cradle to work with the suna service but work it does.

So it is possible to get it enabled on existing units.

VW/SKODA should actually be compelled to offer it as they advertise the traffic function/TMC as being available in their literature.

No it's not, you purchased a cradle that has the FM component required to enable the service and the license is attached to that cradle. The RNS 510 has the TMC functionality inbuilt.

Bulls**t, the traffic function is available but SUNA are a private company (that receive government funding and assistance) and choose to market their product in a way that requires you to purchase a brand new unit with it enabled to use the service, you can't buy a subscription to the service and they choose what to support.

The service is useless anyway so it's not like you're missing anything, better to use Google Traffic as it's actually usable and up to date rather than 30 minutes or more out of date.

Well tell us what you really think!

I dont give a crap whether it is SUNA or someone else, the VW and SKODA literature says the TMC is available so it should be available...

TMC IS available, the unit has the TMC functionality built in however SUNA are a commercial operation that broadcast a signal that is encrypted and only readable by customers of theirs. There is nothing stopping you or anyone else from setting up your own service that will broadcast an unencrypted TMC signal.

Volkswagen also say the car has a CD player, is it their fault if you don't have any CD's to play in there? Should Volkswagen supply you with free CD's?
