On some of the saved radio stations I have on my RNS I get a little "TP" symbol appearing which IIRC from the manual means Traffic Programme. Does that mean SUNA is broadcasting on those frequencies and the RNS is picking up that there is a data stream there? I've always wondered whether they were legitimate or just something weird that appears when you tune into certain radio stations...

If you have TP enabled in the setup the TP symbol will turn on when it picks up a broadcast (encrypted or not). SUNA for example transmit in Brisbane on Nova, not that you need to be tuned to Nova to pick up the traffic broadcasts but this is the channel that it's broadcast with. I assume that in Melbourne and Sydney they only broadcast on one channel as well.

Mav - next logical question given your recommendation regarding google traffic - is there any clever way of making it work on the RNS - as I cant think of any.

With regards VW/SKODA's obligation to make it work - they sell the device with the RDC-TFC function advertised as a feature and I reckon that they should make it work.

SUNA are the only show in town, and whilst I appreciate what you say about them being a private company, I wasn't directing my comments towards SUNA but towards VW/SKODA. It is my view, to follow on from your analogy, that given that SUNA is the only show in town for RDC traffic data, then they have sold the RNS with a CD player - but left the consumer to make the CD's before they use it.

I believe VW/SKODA should be forced to sit down with SUNA and come to some arrangement - or provide some form of recompense to the punters that bought the system on the understanding that it had certain capabilities.

I didn't say there was, what I did say was that the only useful traffic system was the google one which is fully integrated into Audi's new satnav system which also gives you street view along with many other features.

Talk about a straw man argument.

VW/Skoda sell their cars with many "capabilities" listed.

They have speedometers capable of doing 250kph+, should they be obligated to supply me with roads that allow this speed? After all it's clearly shown in the brochures.

What about their 5 seats, should they also supply you with friends/family to fill up those empty seats?

See how pointless those sorts of arguments are? The car can do both of these (as in it has the capability to do it) but you need the right conditions (just like you need to live somewhere there is a free or subscription traffic service to use the traffic facility).

And as for advertised as a feature, tell me where they have advertised the car with this as a major selling point because in every brochure I've looked at it I can't recall it being mention nor in the specs more than once or twice in small print.

??? So if the AM stations were switched off this is also Volkswagen/Skoda's fault and they should have to provide AM stations? I'm not following your logic at all.

I believe VW/SKODA should be forced to sit down with SUNA and come to some arrangement - or provide some form of recompense to the punters that bought the system on the understanding that it had certain capabilities.
Why should they be forced to pay Suna a fee for every car sold in Australia when a) the service is only in capital cities, b) 99.9% of customers wouldn't give a toss and c) the service is useless?

If you read the brochures and specs sheets that were supplied by Volkswagen/Skoda you would realise that some features may not be usable and that you should confirm any details with your dealer. By all means however take Volkswagen/Skoda to court because even the most stupid of judges will not believe that you based the purchase of your car on it working with a third party supplier's service.
