    Strange whine

My car has developed a strange whine...

I threw the wife out of the car but that did not help...

Seriously though, I have a whine that seems to be rev dependant and at first blush seemed to be alternator noise thru the stereo however turning the stereo off the whine persists...

Anyone else have this? Any ideas...

It might be a gearbox or a diff mate. I got a whine in my third gear and a bit in fourth. A gearbox oil change might sort the problem out, although i know nothing about DSGs. Someone else might give you a better answer

    Car has only done 35K...

This is not a mechanical whine of that I am certain...

it doesn't matter if a car has done only 35k. you didn't mention that it wasn't a mechanical whine

Dave, IF you have the stereo unit with the SatNav, then I can tell you I have the same problem. The SatNav version has a hard disk & a damn cooling fan which whines badly. And, yes, the fan is still active for a while after you turn the stereo off so as it gets enough cooling into the system (i.e. hard disk). I've complained to a couple of dealers now & they persist that it's within normal limits & won't have a bar about doing anything about it. Even tried to call VW head office in Sydney but they don't give a rats tail about my little problem.

    Good luck!

Same here: the RNS510 seems to get too hot, then the fan kicks into overdrive and remains on to cool the unit even if I turn off the ignition and leave the car...
