Cost $123, may need doing every few years.
Sounds like someone was a sucker for a pointless dealership upsell...

On the note of air conditioner...

Is it possible to have the recirculation button permanently on?
i.e. no air to come in the car?

I know I can just close each vent individually but that just takes more time and slightly inconvenient.

On my B7, when you turn the recirc button on it remains on until I select otherwise. There is also an Auto (A) setting that is supposed to switch between fresh and recirc depending on pollution levels. Clever if it works

Still waiting for my activated carbon impregnated Mann filter from UK.

    Just an update,

It has taken a little longer for the cabin air filter to arrive from UK than ebay predicted, but I have finally swapped it out.

Not very difficult to do except for where the foam covering lips under the back edge of the glove box.

For those who are may change their own filter the original part number is Mann CUK 2939/1 with the activated carbon.

I will report back latter whether the filter change removes the acrid smell.

Yes the CARBONed one should remove the smell as per my experienced without using any spary or dedicated automotive air disinfectant
I have but 3 from EBay (UK) as Ebay has the 20% promo from time to time which cost me around avg AUD$15 each inc postage . I generally swap them around 12 months as a preventive exercise before they get smelly.

The acrid smell seems to have gone.

Surprised by how little muck was trapped by the cabin air filter to cause such a bad smell.

The reason it wont stay on recirculate is deliberate as if the air gets stuffy or a leaky exhaust gets into the cabin it can potentially put you to sleep or even kill you. Most modern cars only let you be on it for a short time and revert back to fresh .

I have used this Einszett Air conditioner sanatizer and it works a treat.

This guy in Murumbeena where I get all my detailing products from down here in Victoria sells it but I am sure you could find it at other stores.

You put your air con on high activate the can and let the air con recirculate and the contents from the can filters through your system killing off all the smells and bacteria.

Worked a treat in my Wife's AH Astra....

I think it would work even better if you pulled the filter out first.
