Yep, those disinfectants don't do much for the filter.
Pull out old filter, spray inside housing/set off anti-bac bomb, then fit new filter.

Yeah true new filter is obviously a no brainer but to actually neutralize that odour and have the contents of the can cover the ducts inside with the anti bacterial agent would be a worthwhile investment.
Hey I was happy to spend $20 on the Astra to get rid of that damp smell every time we turned the Air Con on.

Amalgam is correct but it is possible to wash them once or twice. They used to do it at the Subaru forum on the Libertys because the replacement filters were a ridiculous price.
If you don't value your time....
Knock the loose stuff off the filter
Make up a tub or bucket of laundry suds and vigorously dip the filter in/out of the bucket. You might have to do a couple of changes of water/suds.
If it's a carbon impregnated filter you will also be washing the carbon out.
Give it a final rinse in clear water.
Hang it in the sun / breeze to dry - this will take most of the day.
The paper is relatively fragile so you can't apply to much water pressure in the direction of flow.
Personally, I'd rather change them every 12 months with the cheap eBay units
