Rocket,
Just checking that you agree with my interpretation - snow chains are required to be carried at all times - the authorities (whoever they may be) do NOT accept the socks as an approved driving aid in snow at this point in time?
I'm not arguing about what is and isn't legal here. I'm arguing about what is the better product. And I have reached my own conclusion from information and demonstrations available to ANYONE who wants to access it - and that conclusion is that the snow socks are superior to chains in every way.
Hence why when I go to the snow this year, I'll be carrying chains (to keep the out of date law makers and enforcers happy) but fitting snow socks if conditions require more grip than the standard road tyre provides. Like I said, I will use what is safest and works best, and imo that's the snow socks.
When a semi-trailer can do a hill start in snow and ice from being stopped while wearing snow socks but can't when wearing chains, it's pretty clear really.

Passat MY09 125TDi DSG Wagon - Silver
Tint, E-Tailgate, Electric Leather Seats with memory, Rubber Mats, Boot Liner, Fiscon Bluetooth
Correct! And I will carry chains.
Doesn't mean I won't use Snow Socks instead of chains though...
Whenever I've stopped to fit chains, they don't inspect your efforts. They're usually too busy helping the people without a clue.
It is different for vic but in nsw snow socks are legal.

4WD vehicles
* As an alternative to snow chains, 4WD vehicles not fitted with winter tyres may be fitted with snow traction devices, such as items made from textiles, that comply with the Austrian Standard ONORM V5121.1.

That only applies to 4WD vehicles though Peedman.
Hi I thought id just chime in with regards to when chains are needed... my understanding for Mt. Buller, is that ALL overnight vehicles are required to carry chains. Saying that though, for 4WDs they are very very rarely used.
I like the look of those snow socks as chains are a #*&##&# PITA to fit haha
MkIV Bora [SOLD]
MkV GTI PIRELLI
