Size of the Turbo in the Diesel Passat?

Does anyone know how big the turbo is (either CC or diameter) in the Diesel Passat?

A friend (mechanic) said that he's heard the turbo in it wasn't all that large and he did not think it would make all that much difference to the ponderous acceleration associated with diesels.

Given my mechatronics unit is playing up and due to be replaced on 29 March, I've yet to take him for a spin in it, but I wanted to roll up with some spec's when I do.

Your "mechanic" friend sounds like he knows SFA about modern VAG diesels !

I'd ignore much of what he says in future, especially as it relates to diesels. If you want to confuse him just tell him the turbo has VNT technology and that makes it go really well at all revs.

Make up your own mind about the performance - are you happy with it ? While the TDIs aren't as free revving as the petrol turbos, they do have a nice slug of mid range torque.

    Thanks for the response gregozedobe,

I am reserving judgement on my experience with the cars acceleration as I am not sure how much influence the mechatronics unit is having at the moment as it seems to be quite touchy when cold and the power occasionally comes from no where when it shifts from 2nd to 3rd. It also hates reversing and feels like a clutch slipping when reversing up in incline.

I've been told by the Barloworld service rep. that there is no damage occuring to the rest of the gearbox (clutches etc.) or engine while the mechatronics unit is requiring replacement although if you or anyone knows otherwise let me know and I'll bring it up when I take it in on the 29th.

    Thanks again,

    Ah yeh, What's VNT?

Thanks Gavin and gregozedobe, you're right that might just blow his mind.
