Should I stay or should I go ???? Help needed

I thought this looked an active forum but bloody hell !!!

So it appears there are a few Subby converts - that reassures me somewhat as the Suby has a very high loyalty retention ratio. Thats why I came here looking for opinions.

I have been to 3 dealers so far:

1. Barlow World - No r36 at all & disinterested sales pll
2. Essendon - only 1 sold R36 there (SalesMgr took my fone # but on scrap of paper so not hopeful)
3. Sth Yarra - 1 car also sold - good salesguy very helpful & knew Subbies as well

None could say when they would accurately have a test car but all confirm the 4 month wait. The finance manager at Sth Yarra reckoned he could have sold 20 be4 June 30 if he had stock. Like a lot of ppl the 50% Govt allowance has me looking at a car before the end of the year.

So far I have sat in the drivers seat & the rear seat ... they hid the keys so I had to make vroom vroom noises

As a current WRX owner waiting for delivery on a R36, it was time for me to grow up. I have had WRXs' for the last 11 years.

Back in November 07, I wanted to get out of my current WRX (01) but not necessarily to the new WRX. At the time there was nothing else around.(trust me , I looked ) I also seriously looked at the GT liberty but knew the new one was around the corner.

So after contemplating I took the safe bet and took delivery of the MY 08 WRX after a great price. It never really gave me the buzz of my previous WRX's and knew it was time to move on.

I did take a R36 for a test drive, just to confirm it was THAT good, as I would have signed up regardless.

I also came from Subaru, having 5 all told. A 1998 2.5lt Outback, then a 2001 Outback H6, then a 2003(?) new version Outback 3.0R, then a 2005(?) Liberty 3.0 B Spec Wagon, then a 2006(?) Liberty B Spec Wagon. I then went to a Passat 3.2lt 4 Motion wagon in 2008, and now the R36 Wagon.

There is no doubt that the Subaru was an excellent car in all the incarnations that I owned them in, but for my style of driving, the Passat is a much better car, IMO. The DSG gearbox is just one of the many things that are so good on the Passat as is the solid build and the many little things that go to make up a great driving experience.

Things like a gas strut for the bonnet, no big deal, but the Subaru *should* have had one. Proper tie down hooks in the cargo area, rain sensing wipers, MFD, being able to program things through the MFD like the number of flashes that the blinker does when you touch it to change lanes, muting the stereo when the reverse sensors are activated. These are just some of the nice touch features which may be small things on their own, but when added up, they really make the Passat a joy to own and drive.

The issues I had with the Subaru Liberty 3.0lt B Spec was that it's torque was developed too high up in the rev band for sedate city driving and I always felt that I had to rev it just to get it moving. This is fine for spirited driving, but a little tiring if you just wanted to have a relaxing drive.

This is no such issue with the R36 as it develops peak torque very low in the rev band and the DSG makes superb use of all that torque and power.

To me, the difference between the Subaru and the R36 is like chalk and cheese and the price difference is not so much either. The R36 is possibly the best bang for you buck drive around, IMO.

Have you tried Werribee? I didn't see if they had any R36s when I was there about a fortnight ago, but I'll probably be there again soon....

I got it tuned, changed the air intake, got coilovers from H'n'R (Hight adjustable), H'n'R sway bars front and rear, Race compound brake pads, cat-back from Evolve Technik (My ECU tune are from them as well), High flow 100 cell cats and camber adjustable strut tops. So yea, its a bit faster than a stock one and a much firmer ride. Sounds ok. If u want just drop us a line (PM)

Did the rear swaybar make much diff ? I put one on my last Liberty & it made a huge difference.

I cancelled my V6 Passat order pretty much the day after VW showed the r36 at the 2006 Essen Motorshow. Waited till July 08 to get the car.
