    Sat Nav Problem

For those with the fitted RNS510 Sat Nav Unit I have they same problem that is also in every Tom Tom and Navman I have used. Would be good to see if anyone has got around this. (Both Swallowtail and I talked about this yesterday but couldnt find a quick fix)

The problem is that unless you know the exact suburb you are looking for you can search by street name alone. You may think this is stupid however its needed in many instances.

For example.. last weekend I was on the other side of town and needed the nearest Bunnings, so looked up the addy (in the iphone) and it was 1925 Gympie Road, Carseldine. So, in the GPS, start with Carseldine, then the road, Gympie, then the number... but guess what, it only goes to 1844 when we need 1925 and there is no way around it. Unless you know waht the next suburb is then you cannot find the exact location. This happens about 30% of the time in Brisbane, especially on longer roads where 3-5 suburbs share the same postcode. The system supposedly lets you choose by postcode but we couldnt seem to get that sorted either?

Garmin gets around this by allowing you to choose "all suburbs" at the start so you can then give the street address (even without the number if you dont know it) and it will display all the suburbs where that street exists, you then pick the suburb and away you go. Its such a simple thing to fix but there seems to be no way around in in the current system

Any ideas on a fix? How do other people get around this?

It's present on Toyota Satnav too.

I think the problem is the supplied map data is all from sensis. All use it so all have the errors. It's not just long roads either - sometimes the street numbers won't all be present on small streets.

Sensis supplies Garmin as well. It's not so much an error in the mapping data as it is more a quirk of the RNS firmware not allowing you to skip over the suburb if you don't know it. I've got both Garmin portable and Kenwood/Subaru nav in my RB and I don't have this problem with either unit, in fact the Subaru you enter the street first and then it lists suburbs from memory (wife drive the car mostly).

Have you tried just putting Brisbane in the suburb field?

Just tried this, it can assist but is not 100% of a fix. when you do this and enter a street name (or select it from the list) it will show the street names in 2 ways... Gympie Road, Carseldine or just Gympie Road.

Nope, it needs a suburb first or it will use the last suburb you went too

I feel your pain there, I used to live in brisbane, if you put in gympie road you could end up near the city or 20km away in carseldine....! BTW I don't know a fix either
