Two reasons. First, it's what it had when we bought it 21 years ago..Just curious... why on earth would you want a 3.5" exhaust on a non-turbo 1110cc engine?

Second, the car is slightly less visible on the road than a motorbike - the top of the windscreen is about 3 inches lower than the window line on a Polo-sized car. Hence making sure it's loud (but compliant) is one way of making sure that buses don't drive over the top. It also has big horns for the same reason.

Love that noise. It is due to the idle being slightly higher on startup. You will notice the idle drops lower after a minute or so... and with it goes the lovely sound.
